Page One
Tom the monkey was feeling very cheeky today.

“Okay Tom, I’m going to work,” Tom’s mother said. “Do you promise to be very good while I’m gone?”

Tom decided he better not tell his mother how cheeky he was feeling. He would keep that a secret. “Yes mom,” he said, smiling. “I will be a very good monkey today.”

“Very good,” Tom’s mother said. “If you’re extra good I might even bake you some banana bread later tonight. I know it’s your favorite.”

Tom waved good-bye to his mother and watched as she left for work. After she was gone, Tom looked around the house and wondered what kind of mischief he could get into.

“Oh, bananas!” he shouted in frustration when he saw the sink had overflown. Bubbles and soapy water were covering the kitchen floor. “I have to fix this!”

Tom turned the water off and tried to clean the mess. He tripped and knocked over all the bananas into the water.

Page Nine

“I think I keep making things worse for myself,” Tom said. “Mom is gonna kill me!”

Tom decided to sit down in the soapy mess and eat a soggy banana.

“At least my last meal will be a good one,” he said, thinking of how angry his mother would be when she got home.

Suddenly Tom heard the door open. He looked up and saw his Dad standing there!

“What in the world happened?” Tom’s Dad said, looking at the mess everywhere. “The house looks like a pig’s sty! You do realize monkeys aren’t pigs, don’t you?”

“I know,” Tom said. “And to think, mom was gonna make banana bread if I kept the house clean.”

“Did you say banana bread?” Tom’s dad said. “Well, come on! Let’s get this place clean before your mother gets home! No way am I missing out on banana bread!”
