He is not the minor character, but the catalyst as he sees the world as it is and acts in a way that will help himself. Hamlet is the main character of the play Hamlet, he is a man attempting to show that Claudius is guilty of murder and who has gone out of his mind due to this knowledge. At the end of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead the two characters Rosencrantz and Guildenstern open the letter which will be given to the king of England in order to sentence Hamlet to his death. Hamlet is there in the background watching when they open, and when they decide to hand the letter to the king anyways he is angry. In the play, it has Hamlet spit at the audience to show his disgust at them for betraying him too. "HAMLET comes down to footlights and regards the audience. The others watch but don't speak. HAMLET clears his throat noisily and spits into the audience." (Stoppard, Rosencrantz 59) Guildenstern is the primary reason why they betray Hamlet as he convinces Rosencrantz that death is not something to be feared when it is unknown what happens. Therefore his reasoning is hypocritical since he betrays Hamlet out of fear for his own death. Afterwards, Hamlet betrays them in turn by replacing his name with theirs showing that Hamlet, the opposite of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, has control over events. Here begins the idea of fate and its symbolism to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. It was purely an act of fate that Rosencrantz stopped in the middle of a very important journey to pick up an unimportant coin. Fate continues to work through the coin, causing the toss to end up heads 156 times in a row. King Claudius tries to keep a close eye on Hamlet to make sure that Hamlet is going to be harmful, but because of this many of the spies get killed. This act of spying causes Hamlet to question everyone’s loyalty, including his own mother’s loyalty to Hamlet’s belated father. This issue with loyalty also causes Hamlet to be rude to all those around him. During the drama, Shakespeare uses dialogue, staging, and irony to show that when Prince Hamlet and Queen Gertrude were arguing the ghost that Hamlet sees isn’t there,…

In a world where humans are frequently told to accept one another’s flaws and imperfections, one may still feel the pressure to meet the societal standards of both appearance and personality. In order to fulfill these standards, humans tend to hide their true self from others, and these hidden emotions are commonly expressed through any form of theater or art in which that individual can relate to. With the authentic emotions of an individual revealed, a certain truth in reality is discovered about that person. Although Shakespeare lived in a different era, the characters in his play, Hamlet, reveal that the times have not changed since many truths in reality are uncovered when the characters’ emotions are revealed through theater or art.…

The death of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern becomes inevitable when Hamlet realizes that they are working for Claudius. Hamlet expresses his opinion of the two when he declares, “Ay, Sir, that soaks up the King’s countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the King best service in the end. He keeps them like [an ape] an apple in the corner of his jaw, first mouthed, to be last swallowed. When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you, and, sponge, you shall be dry again,” (Shakespeare 4.2. 15-21).…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are like Claudius’ servants. They may be friends with Hamlet, but their services are for the benefit of Claudius. For example, when Hamlet asks Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for their purpose of visiting Hamlet, Guildenstern reluctantly admits that the King instructed them to spy on Hamlet. In addition, when Hamlet kills Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern do not appear to care about Hamlet’s mental state after committing a murder; they are at the scene because they are following orders from Claudius. Furthermore, even if Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are not aware of Claudius’s plans and simply think that Hamlet is going England to treat his mental illness, they did not show concern for Hamlet’s wellbeing when they continue their journey without Hamlet.…

“No place indeed should murder sanctuarize; / Revenge should have no bounds” (IV.vii.140-141). Here, King Claudius justifies the act of revenge while he is ironically oblivious to Hamlet’s plans of vengeance. In Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the theme of revenge closely surrounds each character, whether the character is one to deliver it or feel the consequences of it. In this particular story, the characters directly involved in vengeance reside in close father-son relationships and therefore seek to exact revenge on their fathers’ offenders. Fortinbras’s direct actions are mainly unseen until the final scene but end in a sorrowful acceptance of great fortune.…

Other characters’ death involved were either the effect of Hamlet’s lunacy or the effect of their own nosiness. Despite Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were both Hamlet’s childhood friends, they obeyed the King’s order to spy on Hamlet. Hamlet became suspicious of them and he did not considered them as friends, as Hamlet regarded his friends as someone he could trust, like Horatio. His once friends became his enemies. Because of Hamlet’s hunger to avenge his father, he lost allies and cut all other connection he could have if Hamlet moved on from his father murder.…

While Gertrude finally seems to understand the depth of feeling Hamlet’s father’s death has invoked in her son, it appears that the King remains utterly bemused by it. He seems insistent that Hamlet must be moved by something “beyond his father’s death.” Although speaking under the guise of a concerned relative, we know from scene two that Claudius sees Hamlet’s grief as nothing more than “unmanly.” From this it is plain that his real motivation in having Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come is to probe Hamlet for information - “to gather so much as from occasions you may glean.” Perhaps this is a glint of paranoia becoming visible, as he fears discovery of the crime he committed.…
