Tom Sawyer Transformation

“Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything's different?” This quote said by C.S. Lewis certainly describes how I look back at the Tom Sawyer unit. It also represents how I look back on my 7th grade progress. While glancing back at Tom's experiences and my 7th grade year, both academically and socially I've noticed a bit of significant transformations. To begin, I noticed while looking back how Tom developed more empathy and maturity. In the starting he did not care if he disobeyed Aunt Polly, and he didn't seem to notice he was hurting her feelings. In the beginning chapter on page twelve, he showed us just that. “My look behind you aunt! The old lady whirled round, and snatched her …show more content…
In chapter 19 on page 117, Tom is melancholy because of his bad behavior and actions. “He hung his head and could not think of anything to say for the moment. Then he said: Auntie, I wish I hadn't done it - but I didn't think.” Another thing I noticed was how Tom started to mature and became more involved with the bigger problems of the real world. At the opening of the book, it seemed as though Tom was more concerned about licking (punching) other boys. In chapter 1 page 16, Tom got in a fight with a boy for no essential reasoning. “ In an instant and tumbling in the dirt gripping together like cats; and for the space of a minute they tugged and tore at each other's hair and clothes, punched in scratched each other's noses, and covered themselves with dust and glory.” Then at the end of the book on page 139 …show more content…
This year I walked into my second day of language arts, and took a grammar quiz that I half guessed on. I knew from years earlier that I wasn't an expert in grammar. I ended up scoring around the fifties. After walking out of that classroom, I felt absolutely disheartened about my first test grade. After going through the grammar unit I felt like I had a great understanding of grammar. Eventually we took the second test with better confidence. The whole class seemed as though they were very content with their new scores. As for me, I scored at least thirty points higher, and I was thrilled. I felt as though I was the queen of a kingdom. This year I also noticed a change in my social studies. I remember from the beginning of the year Mr. Determan said social sturdiest will be a lot more advanced this year. After being in the class for almost a year, I understand what he meant. Now I not only know the basics, I know the different battles, people, dates, and stages of our country's

Race has been and always will be a subject that will have different opinions and ideas about it. Mark Twain uses his novel “Pudd’nhead Wilson” to express his thoughts on race in a variety of ways. There are some plausible reasons to believe that Twain thinks blood essentially defines a character. However, it seems as if he states these in a joking matter in many cases. Also, the idea of nature versus nurture is a key factor in identifying the views Mark Twain has on race and it seems to outweigh any thought that can point towards race being able to define character.…

Tom Buchanan seems like a bad person for cheating on his wife and disrespecting George. However, when Tom bought Myrtle a dog on page 28 he appears to turn a new leaf because this act implies he cares about Myrtle. Later on in the chapter Tom denotation of when it says “Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand” it affects my reaction to this character because that act of abuse makes me think Tom is a truly heartless person. Also, it was implied that Tom was becoming a more likable person. Additionally, there is irony because Tom cheats on Daisy which is disrespectful however, Tom does not want Myrtle to say Daisy because it is disrespectful.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee characterizes Tom Robinson as a man who demonstrates the truth that harming something or someone who does no harm to society is wrong. Lee compares Robinson to a mockingbird in that both Tom and the the mockingbird both do no harm to society. Rather, these “mockingbirds” help people in whatever way they can. Whether it be busting up a chiffarobe or singing a beautiful song on a quiet Sunday afternoon, killing a so-called “mockingbird” is most definitely a sin. Lee does an excellent job displaying Tom in the story as being a kind and helpful African-American man.…

Tom does not realize that he, Jim, and Huck could be in mortal danger if they are not careful when they bust their captured friend out. Due to this ignorance that Tom portrayed, it ended up in all three of the boys getting physically hurt. As mentioned in chapter 41, their attempt to escape did not go as planned because they attracted attention while Tom made a noise going over the fence; causing the farmers to shoot at them and wound Tom. This was just one of the examples that shows Tom is just being a normal thirteen year old boy that wants to experience the adventure instead of thinking through things. The movie and play productions of “The Glass Menagerie” tell very different stories. The play tells a story of a family with no father – emphasis on no father – that can’t seem to be nice or truthful to one another. The movie tries to tell a similar story but they avoid mention of the father as much as possible. In the beginning of the movie Tom’s opening words are cut out, negating the fact that the entire story is Tom’s memory of what happened.…
