“Best friends” is a term used to describe two or more people with a close bond and many similarities. In reality, being best friends doesn’t mean liking the same things, but bonding together with your differences. In Mark Twain’s novel, Tom Sawyer, two best friends Tom and Huck go on many adventures and witness many things together. One of the many tragic events that they witness is Injun Joe, the antagonist of the novel kills a man named Dr. Robinson. This event brings Tom and Huck closer than ever before. Tom’s status towards his community was considered very immature because was always finding his way to trouble no matter where he was or what he was doing. Along with all this, there was still some respect towards him because he had grown up with a family and the right kind of discipline. Huckleberry Finn comparatively was different, he was considered the outcast of the town never given any attention because he was undisciplined and the son of the town drunkard. For example, on page 30, Twain illustrates many actions of Huckleberry that are frowned upon by the community of St. Petersburg, he says, “ Huckleberry did not have to go to school or church. There was no one to make him go. He could sit up as late as he pleased. He was always the first by to go barefoot in the spring and the last one to go barefoot in the fall. He never had to wash nor put on clean clothes.” This quote addressed some differences with Tom and Huck because with Tom if he were to do any of those actions he would be punished because he was raised like that but with Huck, there would be no one to tell him not to do it.
