The book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer written by Mark Twain, is about a young boy who is growing up and living life in the village of St. Petersburg. The twelve year old boy, Tom Sawyer, is a mischievous child with an active imagination. He is often getting himself and his friends, Joe Harper, Huckleberry Finn, and Becky Thatcher, in and out of trouble. Regardless of his behavior he has a good heart and a strong conscience. Tom enjoys stepping up and being the leader of the crowd but he follows footsteps too. Throughout the story he follows Huck and agrees to keep the oath to never report the murder. For instance, Becky says, “Tom, Tom, we’re lost! We’re lost! We never, never can get out of this awful place! Oh, why did we ever leave the others?”. Becky questions why she ever left the others on the cave tour and never returned home to her parents. As she worries about the decisions she made with Tom, she represents the damsel in distress. Later, the heroic Tom says, “... Cheer up, Becky, and let’s go on trying.” He encourages her to move on and try to find the “light at the end of the tunnel” or in this case the “light at the end of the cave”. The evidence from the pirate scene, the robber scene and the cave scene all show that Tom is the true leader in many cases. He has lead more adventures than Huck, he has made more life threatening decisions than Joe, and he has comforted more than just Becky. Tom is truly the most valuable leader in the book and that his shown through his actions and personality. Not only does Tom have a smart, creative and sneaky ideas but he also has a leadership skills like no other.
