In the story “To Kill A Mockingbird” there are two characters who have tough lives, Tom
Robinson and Walter Cunningham. Tom Robinson lives with his wife and kids and has a
good job but the reason why his life is tough is because he is black and lives in the 1930’s
where black people are discriminated against. Walter is a farmer who is white but poor, he
and his family don’t accept anything from anyone because they can not pay them back.
Tom Robinson is discriminated against because he is black. The fact that back then black
people were not treated as fairly as white people wasn’t good for Tom and then while in the

In court after how the trial went Tom and Atticus,
father of the main characters Scout and Jem and was Tom’s lawyer for the trial, had
seemed to be favored to be found not guilty but Tom was found guilty which most likely if he
was white he would’ve been found not guilty.
Tom didn’t particularly had too tough of a life in fact he was usually a happy man. Some

other things that had to deal with was having a useless left arm which when he was younger
he got his arm caught in a cotton gin. He has dealt with his left arm by making his right arm
very powerful and still works on a farm and both enjoys his job and works hard. He does
deal with the Ewells who discriminate him the most which doesn’t help too much that he
has to go by their house everyday to get to work. Tom deals with the Ewells by not causing
them any trouble and helps Mayella with what she needed help with.

Also early in the story after Atticus had finished business with
Walter Sr. Atticus knew Walter couldn’t pay him with money but also couldn’t pay him something else at that time so Atticus let him pay him back later and Walter paid him back with crops and pigs’ feet. Wasn’t mentioned in the book but was in the movie which if was said in the book the quote would be in about page 15 Atticus told Scout that, “Mr. Cunningham doesn’t liked to be thanked,” after Walter brought them crops and Atticus and Scout thanked him.
Some other things that Walter Sr. and his family might had to deal with was the possibility of not being able to grow crops. Crops are the only things they can pay people back with and if they can’t grow crops they would be in big trouble. Another is the possibility with paying back with all the crops that they won’t have enough food for themselves. They risk starvation with the possibility of not growing enough crops.
These were examples of how tough life was for Tom Robinson and Walter Cunningham Sr. in the story. For Tom it’s how hard life can be for a black person because of discrimination. For Walter Sr. it’s how hard life can be for a poor farmer who can only pay back with
