There are many characters in the novel that are mockingbirds. A character in the story who is a “mockingbird’” is Tom Robinson. I think Tom Robinson’s case is like killing a mockingbird. I believe this because “Mockingbirds don 't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don 't eat up people 's gardens, don 't nest in corncribs, they don 't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That 's why it 's a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee Harper, 93) like Miss Maudie says. Firstly, during the trial, the man named Mr. Link Deas announces in the court that “I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an‘ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck.” This shows that the boy has been working responsibly and hasn’t gotten into any trouble being a worker at the cotton farm with Deas. He is also responsible because being in the lower classes and one handed he is supporting his family consisting of a wife and three children. This shows that Tom’s innocent because he is responsible and mature in his decisions. I think his responsibility wouldn’t let him be hasty about getting into a crime since he also had a family to support. This is a character trait that Robinson has that shows he is innocent. Another way readers are able to predict Tom Robinson innocence is that he is not hesitant about any of the answers he is giving. To start, when Tom is called into the witness box and is asked about his first court case. The reader is able to see that he is calmly answering the questions and it can be seen he is being honest about it because the court already has all the details of his first case. His words and expressions are normal unlike the white women Mayella’s who seemed scared from Atticus. Her hesitancy to answer could also be seen when Atticus was asking her questions related to the crime scene. Also, during the actual proceedings of the crime Tom Robinson is asked many questions where he answers without any signs of hesitancy or nervousness. This shows his innocence to the readers because we are able to differ between the
