During Tom Robinson’s trial, Jem and Scout both see the court case and witness Tom’s wrongful conviction of rape. Mr. Gilmer’s Speech Gentlemen, the plaintiff has enough evidence to identify the guilty of Tom Robinson now, and I would like to use my remaining time to remind you the essence of this case briefly. First of all, our defendant, Tom Robinson, is already known that he was given thirty days once for disorderly conduct as he confirmed because he fought with another man, and in that fight knife as a lethal weapon appeared. So we can see that this nigger’s nature is fierce and cruel. "I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of--" He is quickly stopped. It is unheard of a black man to pity a white woman. Tom speaks with honesty.…

In the past, people worried about one main problem: the perpetual struggle between themselves and the government. The people wanted protection against those with the power to control them. However, Mill worried about a much subtler yet even more devastating problem: the tyranny of the majority. While people were more tolerable since rulers’ powers were limited, they failed to see another authority, an authority that controlled them without their knowledge—the tyranny of the majority. Many times, this “majority” opinion developed, without society even realizing it, through the power of custom.…
