Good afternoon, my name is Thomas Opatz and I am proud to represent Maycomb County and to serve as a prosecutor in this case. Today, Bob Ewell stands accused of defamation against Tom Robinson when he made false accusations. This is a case about a man who made these false accusations not only because of Tom Robinson’s skin color, but also because he wanted to cover up what he did. Bob Ewell beat Mayella Ewell and to cover it up, he said Tom Robinson beat and raped her. Members of the jury, the County will now review the evidence against Bob Ewell, who falsely accused Tom Robinson. Our first piece of evidence says this. “He rose to his feet and stood with his right hand on the back of his chair. His left arm was fully 12 inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his …show more content…
Our second piece of evidence helps prove that Bob Ewell is guilty of defamation. “ Mr Tate said, ’Oh yes, that would make it right. It was her right eye, Mr. Finch. she was bunged up on that side.’” (Lee 192). Our third piece of evidence proves that it wasn’t Tom Robinson that beat Mayella Ewell, rather it was Bob Ewell himself. “‘You’re left handed, Mr. Ewell,’ said Judge Taylor. Mr. Ewell turned angrily to the judge and said he didn’t see what his being left handed had to do with it.” (Lee 201-202). Our fourth piece of evidence shows that Tom Robinson couldn’t have beaten Mayella Ewell. “‘You say that you fought him off as hard as you could?...’ asked Mr. Gilmer. ‘I positively did,’ Mayella echoed her father. Lee 206. Our fifth and final piece shows the holes in the defendant’s testimony when he accused Tom Robinson. “ Mr Ewell, did you see the defendant having sexual intercourse with your daughter?’ ‘Yes, I did.’(Lee 198). ‘I don’t remember too well, but next thing I knew Papa was in the room a’standin’ over me hollerin’ who done it, who done it?’(Lee 205). That is our evidence that proves Bob Ewell lied and made false accusations against Tom
