I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, and I am on page 305. The story so far is about the trial of Tom Robinson and the questioning of the lawyers. In this journal, I will be characterizing Tom Robinson.
While reading this book I can see that Tom Robinson has good characteristic traits but I am only going to talk about two of them. Tom Robinson is very kind and loving man. He helped Mayella by doing small jobs not expecting money from her. He helped her because he had such a big heart and he wanted to be nice. Calpurnia said that Tom robinson and his family were “clean-living folks” ( Lee 100). They are good people, they go to church and they do not do any harm to nobody. In chapter nineteen Tom said that he felt sorry for Mayella and her brothers and sisters because they all have to do everything in the house because their dad was always came home drunk and he did nothing to help. Even though Tom was injured and his left arm was broken, he cared and loved his family, he also helped anybody who needed his help and his was also respected like Scout, he never went to anybody's house without their

Despite the fact that his left arm is broken it does not stop Tom from doing good to other people. Tom is a big, polite and strong worker with “broad shoulders and bull-thick neck,” and Scout see that “if he had been a whole, he would have been a fine specimen of a man” (Lee 257). In his trail, Tom answered truthfully to every question that Atticus or other lawyers asked him. He tried to correct all the lies that Bob Ewell and his daughter told about him and he answered polite to all the questions that Atticus or the lawyers were asking him. He admits to Atticus that he did went to Mayella’s house

Along with his innocence, Tom is also hard working. A reason I believe he is hardworking is how he helped Mayella, even though he had another job. Tom could have denied Mayella's request and went on with his day. Instead, he goes willingly out of his way to help her, something a hard worker would do. Another way to prove this is he works all year long, picking cotton and other trees.…

Before the trial had started, Knowing they would accuse Tom Robinson because every white person in this town thinks that every black man will put his hands on a white women even though that is not the case at all in my opinion. I had hope for Tom in the trial but sadly he did not make it. I had too much hope I suppose, but again the whites are always put before us unfortunately. I was just destroyed when they said he was guilty for raping Mayella Ewell. This is not fair.…

Dogs are much closer to humans than one may think. Their loyalty is often reflected and expressed in a person’s daily life. When one first thinks of the definition of ‘loyalty’, the first thought that comes to mind is the undying loyalty of a dog to its owner or the loyalty promised in a wedding vow. However, loyalty is often expressed in many different mannerisms that are not always as severe or endearing and are usually not recognizable until the consequences reveal themselves. Usually, these tests present themselves as the major conflict in stories, such as the The Odyssey and To Kill a Mockingbird.…

After realising that Mr.Arthur was the one that possibly saved her life, Scout began to look at Arthur as sort of a friend, or savior, instead of all the rumors that people had spread about him before. The same can be said about Tom Robinson. Tom and Atticus both know that Mayella Ewell is the guilty person in the court room, but instead of getting mad that Mayella is lieing, Tom tries to connect with her. With all the racism that Tom has to deal with on day to day life, he still tries to connect and understand other people despite who they are, just like the main protagonist, Atticus. Even to the girl who lied under oath in a court of law, and eventually the person that will cause Tom Robinson to loose the court case, he tries to relate…

Frequently, people think of the type of freedom found in America as a life without constraints, a place where they can express their opinions and act without judgement. The New Oxford English Dictionary defines freedom as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint” (“Freedom”). The promise of freedom in America brings hope. However, this hope is not always fulfilled.…

The people that surround her abuse Mayella physically and mentally while treating her as nothing more than an extra hand. Scout even says this about Mayella in Chapter 19, “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world. She was even lonelier than Boo Radley, who had not been out of the house in twenty-five years.” It was because of this loneliness that she reached out for Tom Robinson. Clearly, Tom knows that in that case that he is the prey and the white people are the predator, ready to jump on him and kill him. However, he does not let that discourage him and he speaks the truth in the courthouse case. Those are some reasons of why he is an honest human being. Another characteristic that would describe Tom Robinson would be polite. When he was in the courthouse telling his side of the story, he used an appropriate level of English, which was astounding because usually black men did not go to school.…

Racism had made Robinson’s fate of dead inevitable. “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed”. In the particular place and time, it was simply because Tom was black and Mayella was white. In the era of 1930s, the whites had overwhelming power over the blacks who were seldom protected by law. Although Atticus did a brilliant job to expose Bob Ewell and his daughter’s lies and convinced most people that Tom Robinson was closer to innocence than sin, and it took extra effort and time for the jury to make a verdict, the sentence was still guilty, due to the predominance of racist opinion at that time.…
