While he is always willing to help Mayella, he is respectful of his place in society. Tom understands that he is considered beneath everyone, and he isn't one to combat this. He is a simple person who tries to help everyone he can. While a great majority of that town has a dark, evil side; Tom Robinson continues to show his superiority even though he isn't thought of this way.

Tom Robinson is someone who is not only respectful of Mayella, he is also very compassionate towards her. ‘“Yes, suh. I felt sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em-”’ (Lee 201).
