Tom Robinson Gracious Analysis

Throughout this journal, Tom can be characterized as gracious and innocent. First off, one way Tom Robinson can be characterized as gracious. To start, the first way Tom is gracious is because he helped Mayella with a daily small task that needed to be done. Tom did it out of the kindness of his heart. Mayella offered him money but Tom would not accept the dime because it was an quick minimal effort task. Tom did not complain or show that he did not want to help Mayella. He was quick to jump in and help when the kids were absent or uncooperative. Secondly, Tom’s boss vouched for Tom at the trial. A quote to help visualize this is “... That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck” (Lee 261). As one can conclude from …show more content…
This shows just how altruistic Tom is and how he has a good natured heart. Tom has three children and caring wife that trusts Tom and knows how he would never do such a thing to a woman who has seven other siblings around to take care of. As one can conclude Tom Robinson would never want to treat a women with disrespect. In addition, Tom can also be characterized as innocent. First off, one way that Tom is innocent is that he is not a man to start fights or that he is a threatening person. During the trial Tom stayed calm and listened quietly to what everyone was saying. Tom is a respectable person that does not want to harm or hurt others. Tom took all the wrongful accusations without lashing out at people and acting like the monster people make him out to be. Furthermore, another way Tom is innocent is that he can not show that he is innocent in front of an all white court. Since black are lower in the social pyramid, Tom can not show that he is a kind hearted person. Rape is a capital offense and since Tom is black the jury automatically thinks that he committed the

I am writing an essay to compare and contrast Tom Robinson’s case, and Emmet Till’s case. They had a lot of things similar with their cases, but also a lot of differences. The Tom Robinson case, and the Emmett Till case have a lot in common but they are also different. Something that makes them different is that Tom Robinson was accused of doing something to a white woman that he did not do.…

In this journal I will be predicting the case verdict in pages 208- 281. The first thing that I predict is that the Ewell’s will lose this case. For instance I think they will lose is because Atticus got evidence from when Mr. Ewell is on the stand he is left-handed. I infer form this evidence that he beat up Mayella because people who are left-handed beat up the right side of someone. I think her dad raped her because when he was on the stand from the text of the book it seemed as if he knew exactly what happened.…

Atticus Finch Defense Failed Because People in the jury didn’t like Negros, His world agented two white people, and Tom Robinson said he was sorry for a white woman. The other thing that Atticus defense failed was because the jury wouldn’t take a black man's world over a white man. The jury back then, was not racist and didn't believe anything he said. If tom hadn’t said that “ he felt sorry for maybell” Atticus defense wouldn’t have failed. Back then, No bunch of white people where ever going to take say Tom is innocent, When he "felt sorry" for a white person.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee characterizes Tom Robinson as a man who demonstrates the truth that harming something or someone who does no harm to society is wrong. Lee compares Robinson to a mockingbird in that both Tom and the the mockingbird both do no harm to society. Rather, these “mockingbirds” help people in whatever way they can. Whether it be busting up a chiffarobe or singing a beautiful song on a quiet Sunday afternoon, killing a so-called “mockingbird” is most definitely a sin. Lee does an excellent job displaying Tom in the story as being a kind and helpful African-American man.…

To begin, injustice towards selfless acts is shown through the conflict between Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell. During the trial, Tom is asked by the prosecutors; “Why?”, (Lee, p.200) in reference to why Tom is helping Mayella with house work although he has his own personal chores to accomplish at home in addition to working all day long. Tom replies; “Looked like she didn't have nobody to help her,” (Lee, p.200). He also mentions earlier-on that he chooses to work for Mayella without pay. These statements demonstrate that Tom is a selfless and hard-working man who is only looking to help others that are in need no matter his own responsibilities.…

“In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black mans, the white man always wins.” (295) This is pointed out by Atticus, showing that Tom was only found guilty because of his skin colour. Toms and Arthurs reactions to discrimination differ as well. Tom Robinson tried to defend himself and clear his name even though it was difficult for him to tell the truth.…

The court did not see him for Tom Robinson, the kind man who tries to help people from the kindness of his heart, but for the false sins he’s been accused of. “Then you say she’s lying, boy?” “I don’t say she’s lyin‘, Mr. Gilmer, I say she’s mistaken in her mind.” Despite Tom knowing the entire courtroom quite obviously despised him, he did not hesitate at all to answer the questions. However, there is still caution in his words because he is…

On my poster, I used a rhetorical question towards Scout and whether or not she will be able to handle the trial and the changes it has caused in her life. I used a rhetorical question to catch the reader's eye and make them wonder what will happen next for Scout .In Chapter chapter 9, Scout states “Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more, I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold in, the better off I would be”.(Lee 99)This quote means the scout was having trouble fighting and her father,Atticus told her to stop fighting or she would get in trouble. This is quote helps demonstrate that Scout is having a hard time with the trail and the changes it has…

In this paragraph, I am going to be characterizing Tom Robinson. One word that depicts Tom Robinson would be honest. He is honest for many reasons. My first reason is that he is able to admit anything that he has done. In the courthouse, Tom admitted that he had been convicted for thirty days because he fought with a man and he could not pay the fine to get out (Lee 254).…

Whites in the Maycomb county always assumed the colored folks are worse than them. During the trial, Atticus said, “The evil assumption that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women…” (Lee 275). Tom is an innocent man, he committed no crime, but his only crime was the fact that he was born with a dark tone of his skin color. This “crime” was enough to make any colored man guilty.…

In the past, there was a lot of injustice, and there are a lot of books that showed it. A specific book I’m writing about today is, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this novel, Justice is influenced by age and race, and is distributed unequally in a small town called Maycomb County, specifically when; Tom Robinson, The Ewells, Atticus and his two children, Jem and Scout are affected. Firstly, the Ewells are allowed to do whatever they want, because they are lazy, and white.…

Tom is a generous man doing things like spending time with Mayella to help her around the house, he shows respect when he made sure that when Mayella kissed him to not push or hurt her and finally kind-hearted because he did not ask for money every time he helped, just doing it because she seemed lonely and the kindness in him. Tom is a generous man showing this in his testimony of all the times he helps Mayella with the chores and helping where ever he can even though his family waiting for him at home. “...One day she asked me to come inside the fence and bust up a chiffarobe for her”(191) later Judge Taylor asking “ Did you ever go on the place again?” Tom answering “ Yes suh.” with Judge Taylor “When?”…
