Tom Hill

Tom Hill is the current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vulcan Materials Company; they are the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates—primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel, and a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials, including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete. Mr. Hill started his professional career as an electrical engineer for Vulcan Materials after he graduated college. He took the major of engineering in college because he was always strong in math and science and figured it would be the best choice for him. Throughout college he performed well, but tended to think he maybe should be in business instead due to his preferences; however, he never made the transition. Hill’s background as an engineer, he knew the importance of blending engineering and business for his own benefit. He knew that obtaining business skills was essential to moving up in the company; the key educational component that helped him become as successful as he is today was going back to school for business. Mr. Hill was passionate about leadership in his lecture and thoroughly explained the correlation between leadership and a successful company. His number one rule was that to make sure you treat your employees well; they will be happier, thus making the people around them happier, and their work productivity will increase. Mr. Hill’s second rule is to just let people “do their job”; they might not do it the same way you do. His third rule was to know yourself and to be indispensable.
