The Unbearable Mistake

That one mistake you make without thinking fully, can put you in a situation you can't get out of. Tom Godwin’s short story “The Cold Equations” is about a young girl Marilyn who makes a mistake and get onto a EDS to see her brother. Later on she finds out it was wrong and a mistake to get aboard then has no choice but to take her life to save multiple other people. Marilyn’s character reveals that it is good to learn from mistakes, but pride is important part of learning because Marilyn get onto the EDS without thinking what the situation is. Marilyn had accepted the death because she knew there was nothing to do about it, and Marilyn is proud that she’ll be saving multiple other people then just thinking of herself.

Marilyn explains she didn’t know anything she just got onto the EDS “she was silent for a little while “It was all so wonderful at first; there was plenty of room for me on this ship

Knowing she would not want it that way. She stepped into the airlock and turned to face him, only the pulse in her throat to betray the wild beating of her heart. “Im ready” she said. Marilyn walking to the airlock knowing its what needs to happen shows she accepts her death and has pride doing it. She took awhile to accept it but when she did she knew it was wrong of her to get onto the EDS and it was right because it was the thing that needed to happen to help other.

Marilyn tells Barton what she was thinking at the moment before she goes “At first i was afraid to die. That I was a coward and thought only of myself. Now i see how selfish I was”(Godwin 24). Having Marilyn know she was being selfish and admitting it helped her accept it more, helped barton still save the people on the other planet. Her not being selfish and thinking only of herself will save so many people. Knowing what she's done and the consequences help her accept her
