Tom Baker Hour Classroom Observation

Tom Baker Hour I had the opportunity to be able to attend the Tom Baker Hour with a special guest of Jack Jones. Right off the bat, I was comfortable with the topic of conversation whenever they introduced the candidates for the elevator pitch contest. In the classroom we went over what exactly an elevator pitch is and how helpful it is to have one in the future when networking. I really enjoyed watching a variety of people present their elevator pitches, some included CofC students and some were local businesses from the Charleston area. Moving forward, Tom Baker was interviewing Jack Jones with a handful of questions. These questions had the audience very involved, thus allowing for an even further enhanced experience.

This LOTC was about United Health Care and Optum. I do not remember is Mike was a former Carlson student, but I do know that Grant was. These two men were really interesting to listen to because they talked quite a bit about their experience in business school and how they struggled with some of the material. They noted this was mostly because they felt that some information was unimportant. They also stated that now they wish they would have paid attention more because it turns out that almost all of the information actually was important.…

My favorite part about this class was the, Who am I websites. I enjoyed listening and learning about everybody's life. We have way too much in common our foods, music, lifestyles, families, friends religious, career goals, and etc. Although, I still believe a couple of students didn’t receive the unity messages. Learning about socioeconomic status, race, religion, and cultures were all significant.…

When Isaac was a freshman, he was among a group of African-American students that was transferred to Jefferson Davis High School due to a court order to desegregate the metropolitan schools. Because of the desegregation of Jefferson Davis High School, Isaac’s pre-dominantly black school was shut and the students were bused long distances and spread out among the district’s white schools. Consequently, Isaac’s classmates have little connection with the school’s past and present; as they cannot participate extra-curricular activities due to the distance from their homes and the need to ride the…

I enjoyed many things about our guest speaker. However, if I had to choose one it would have to be when he shared the story of why he left the airline company he was working for in Dallas Texas. The reason I chose this part of his presentation is because he did not agree with the moral decisions they were making, and decided to leave because of them. In the world of business cold hard decisions are made everyday, however Ken Janssen saw the decisions that the company was making and left because of them.…

A couple weeks ago, I sat in my Disease and Society class waiting for my teacher to inform us of our last big assignment of the year. We had been working on our Passion Projects for the past semester - an assignment in which my classmates and I took every Friday to research a topic of personal interest to us. The wait was finally over when Mr. Kite announced that we would be hosting our own TedTalks within the school. I was both nervous and excited at the same time. Excited because I was…

I was recently invited to attend the Toastmasters meeting in Millington, Tennessee, however I was not entirely sure what to expect. I was, to say the least, surprised at how informal and socially casual the club is. In contrast with a TED talk’s audience, there is no harsh buzzer or overbearing timer to stare at while giving your presentation, the meeting was in fact, very relaxed and only focused on self-improvement. It was a place to hear others and be heard yourself, to give honest feedback, to improve the art of the conversation, and to master the art of public speaking.…
