Specifically pertaining to the heart, tolerance can both propel and regulate the amount of diversity. It provides the heartbeat, allowing diversity to circulate. Without tolerance, new beliefs and adaptations would not spread, ultimately causing stagnation within the profession. Tolerance drives diversity by making people more accepting of different qualities. Health care providers must also have a high level of tolerance, particularly, for working with a variety of patients. In physical therapy, some individuals might get upset with therapists for putting them through pain and even become disparaging by an effort to help, making the ability to tolerate even more imperative. Just like a runner preparing for a marathon, the “heart” of a medical professional must be prepared to deal with a high volume of stress. Likewise, the best way to improve this aptitude is through practice or working with a variety of people. Some aspects of tolerance also work to regulate patient care. If a patient becomes stubborn or non-compliant, a therapist may need to reduce the amount of tolerance in order to properly motivate or treat that patient. One function that both tolerance and diversity share, yet require each other to properly work, is the ability to sustain. The heart is continuously pumping blood, and likewise, tolerance promotes diversity. Along with having a constant supply, our blood is always being filtered, recycled and replaced with new cells. Old qualities and methods are exchanged for new ones to be used. In circumspect, it is no coincidence that this leads to a better level of tolerance, emphasizing the importance of the tandem. When both are working properly, a health care provider will not only be able survive, but also thrive. Patients become easier to work with and the ability to adapt for an individual’s needs becomes second nature.
