Tokenism: Culture And Diversity

Decent Essays
Tokenism is the policy and practice of making a perfunctory gesture towards the inclusion of members of minority groups. It is usually a small gesture to create the idea of social inclusiveness and deflect accusations of social discrimination for example some centres may do this by hiring a person from another cultural background and think that that is enough to class them as being inclusive and non-discriminative. Tokenism can be avoided by ensuring that culture and diversity are embedded within everyday practices and policies and that diversity is represented and celebrated throughout all learning and activities this can start by having cultural artefacts and resources evident throughout the centre and used by children in regular play

In spite of decades of diversity policy and practice, America is in many ways more divided than ever when it comes to issues of identity. Critics from the political left argue that we simply need more diversity to overcome the division, while critics from the political right argue that diversity has devolved into an unworkable set of unfair entitlements that are themselves the cause of the division. Understanding the Misunderstanding, the first part of the four-part series Ourselves Among Others: The Extravagant Failure of Diversity in America and An Epic Plan to Make It Work, explains the sources and causes of the social divide in America, and also shows how neither the political left nor the political right have understood the problem or…

History plays one of the most prominent roles in shaping our lives today. Studying the behavior of the elderly, is key in influencing our behavior on a daily basis. The youth fail to behold of the privileges that are given to them today, through the hard work of our ancestors. In my opinion, the biggest barrier that society must overcome is the availability of quality care for all individuals of society, especially those who are in minority groups. A few health disparities for our society include cardiovascular disease, substance use, low socioeconomic status, and being uninsured. These disparities can be significantly reduced if appropriate care is available for all individuals. Lack of funding and resources, especially in regards to these minorities groups, prevent many individuals from ever getting treatment. If every member of society had availability to quality to healthcare, individuals would be able to receive comprehensive care that can prevent the need for further intensive services for their health conditions.…

Equal education for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or educational needs, has been the focus of the educational system. Many laws and federal mandates have been passed to ensure that all students receive equal opportunities in education. However, a recurring issue is happening in our educational society – the underrepresentation of minorities (African American and Hispanic Americans) and low socioeconomic students in gifted education. Underrepresentation refers to the negative discrepancy between the percentage of a student group (example: minorities) in gifted education and the percentage of a student group in the school’s enrollment (Hines, Anderson, & Grantham, 2016). Disproportionality between minority students…

Privilege, a priceless intangible notion that has categorized individuals as those who have and have not. Being a student at Marquette University has made this problem more evident to me on a day to day basis. Along with being a student, I am also categorized as a minority which in this school means segregation. This in one of the biggest problems that plague the campus because those who are not experiencing this problem, often times believe that it is nonexistent. In reality, racism roams freely throughout the campus and because many like myself have not inherited certain privileges we are treated with a lesser standard.…

Tokenism in an early childhood setting is showing little effort, feeling or interest towards the inclusion of different cultures, religions or minority groups. As a carer you need to show effort been made to include & welcome all different types of people to the environment or the setting would be uncomfortable, not welcoming & I know myself I would not want to use a facility that does not make my child or myself feel welcome or value our beliefs, traditions, culture etc. To avoid this occurring in a childhood setting, I would ensure all staff are trained to provide the best environment to have all children feel included & comfortable within their childcare setting. All uncomfortable, awkward, bias, judgmental views should be dealt with immediately…

In order to successfully understand minority influence were interested in finding research that determines how those individuals or minority groups who firmly uphold their own deviant or marginal standpoint can have an impact on the belief systems and behavior patterns of other individuals. Research on minority influence is of recent origin. Most research about social influence in particular, were based and entirely focused on conformity, on the way a group affects individuals and brings about social uniformities (Festinger, 1950). Two experiments investigated whether minority influence and conformity operate by the same or by different processes. It was predicted that subjects who were simultaneously exposed to a majority and a minority…

‘Institutional racism’ is a type of racism that is framed in political and social institutions targeting a certain group to limit their rights. ‘Institutional racism’ in schools has been shown in the Bringing them home report. Schools did not allow Aboriginal children to attend if the white community objected. The term “Tokenism” is maybe something the average person has never heard of. Tokenism is defined as “ the policy and practice of making a perfunctory gesture towards the inclusion of members of minority groups” If you look at any television show you watch or even movie for the most part you will always find at least one use of tokenism. There 's a token black guy who either acts like he is from what people have deemed the ghetto or he is soulful and acts like he’s from the south. There 's sometimes a token gay character that is always portrayed as a flamboyant white male with a high pitched voice and a love for fashion. The less common token is the love interest token which is the girl that the awkward main character has loved since forever but she has herself wrapped around some other guys finger.…
