Token Economy Problem

A Brief Description The purpose of the article Helping Students With Emotional and Behavioral Disorders Solve Mathematics Word Problems (Alter, 2012) was to examine the effects of implementing a token economy when solving math problems for students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Math word problems include using higher order thinking to pick out useful information and using the right technique to answer the problem, which many students with disabilities have a hard time completing. Researchers aimed to find a way for four students to accurately solve word problems. During the intervention, these students were instructed to solve multistep math problems, and they were rewarded with tokens when each step was completed. Results indicated that all students showed great improvement for on task behavior and in math problem solving correctness.
Purpose and Research Questions The purpose of this article was to determine how a token economy could influence mathematical word problems. The two research questions are as follows: Does this intervention improve on task behavior during the mathematics instructional period, and does this intervention improve students` daily percentage of math word problems completed correctly.

The baseline and intervention phase consisted of participants taking pretests prior to baseline data, and then working four times per week in 30-minute increments for baseline data (pre and post test) and 60 minute increments for intervention (daily work). For the intervention phase, the data collector would collect data on individual students work every 15 minutes until the hour was up. During the intervention phase, undergraduate helpers would give hole punches for each step completion while solving the math problems. Every 15 minutes, tokens were exchanged. It took 51 sessions for all students to complete the entire

While I was interpreting the test data I thought about my observations of the student during testing. The observation of the length of time he spent on problems and his often use of his fingers to calculate basic math, initiated my research. I began finding a plethora of research about the importance of math fluency for student success. Math fluency is a student’s ability to quickly recall math facts. A student who has developed automaticity with basic math facts is able to use their entire working memory on the higher level math instead of squandering some of their limited working memory to figure out all of the math facts necessary to solve the problem.…

Not being able to hear is something that many people across the globe have to go through on a daily basis. In the United States alone, “Over 5% of the world’s population – 360 million people – has disabling hearing loss (328 million adults and 32 million children) (WHO). While five percent does not seem like a whole lot, three hundred sixty million is a fairly large group of people that are hearing disabled. Regardless of whether or not that person can hear at all, or is hard of hearing, the fact of the matter is that their lives are much different than most of the world. Everything from playing sports, watching TV, going to school can affect someone who is deaf in a much greater way than those who can hear.…

Giorgio A. Tsoukalos once famously said, “Knowledge is the currency of the universe.” Knowledge is a strong tool that has been utilized by humans for centuries. Foresight and awareness can give the most physically weak men unlimited power within society. Three texts by William Golding, Mark Haddon, and Emma Donoghue illustrate this theme through the actions taken by their characters in undesirable situations. Through these struggles it is understood that knowledge of the truth in a situation truly results in more pleasant outcomes by the resolution of the turmoil.…

Appropriately specific brief summary of MCK Test results. It was during week three that I completed the Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) test for the purposes of determining my level of understanding relating to certain mathematical concepts, such as multiplication, division, addition, and place value (Curtin, 2014). Before starting, I felt overly confident in my ability to successfully answer all the questions within the quiz, however, it was not until I skimmed through the questions that I began to think otherwise. The beliefs in myself concerning mathematics is one of duality: I know that I am more than capable of solving complex questions, yet I am also conscious of my lacking motivation behind the subject itself which stems from…
