Toddler Observation

NAEYC Standard 1a: Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs.

The artifact Toddler Observation was created for my Infant and Toddler course. This is one of the last observations that I did, the center I used was Norfolk Montessori Academy. This observation lasted throughout the fully day of the program. I was to choose one student from their toddler program, I interacted with this child, observed his development in several areas and document my findings. These areas of development were attachment, perception, motor skills and cognition.

This artifact falls under NAEYC Standard 1a because it relates to identifying differently accepts of a toddler’s development. During my observation I identified

    Toddlers can be slow to warm up and cautious in many new situations such as hospitals or around new people such as nurses. To develop a trusting relationship with the toddler during the assessment the nurse should be able to use many different strategies to put the child at ease. One of these strategies is to prepare before coming in the room, if possible wear scrubs with cartoons on them or colorful, the nurse should learn the name of the child in advance, and enter with a smile on their face.
