From there, he/she has the responsibility of motivating these followers. If these people are not motivated, the leader would no longer be a leader but just a supervisor. Others must desire the leader’s objective; the leader must see his/her objective as a way that the involved parties can achieve success (Bellman, 1992). In this leadership role, one can influence other employees to work in harmony and aim to accomplish the same goals. A supervisor, or manager position is not required for one to be a leader. There are times when some employees take it upon themselves to be a leader. They may do this by choosing to lead, provide guidance, and mentor newly hired employees. In order to be a leader, a person must also have the ability to influence others. If they are not able to do this, the employees may take it upon themselves to solve problems on their own or seek leadership from other sources. There are two different forms of leadership that were discussed in this week’s readings, assigned leadership and emergent leadership. Some employees in assigned leadership are put into leadership positions by applying for the job or going to college for a degree. These forms of power are referent power, expert power, legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power (Northouse, 2013). Of these, referent power and coercive power could be the most influential. Reason being, leaders who has referent power can be likened to one who is charismatic. Because many people in the workplace admire them, it would be easy for them to convince their followers to cooperate with job responsibilities passed down to them. Coercive power is one of the most influential, since fear can be one of the strongest emotions that affects people’s decisions and also can cause them to put off making decisions. My leadership style is supportive leadership. This model of leadership is when the leader has willingness to explain himself, is approachable, and has a genuine humanitarian concern for his subordinates or employees (Usman, Usman, & Sugianto, 2016).
