Today's Exhausted Superkids Summary

Superior Essays
As a freshman in college I have a fair amount of knowledge in literature. I do quite a bit of reading while in college and on summer breaks. Much of the reading is on scientific articles which I use to guide myself at my work. This due to the fact that I work at a veterinary hospital and I’m majoring in animal science. The articles speak about scientific research that’s being conducted to discover a cure for a disease, medical procedures, different types of parasites, etc. However, when college is in session I mostly read assigned readings. This includes chapters from textbooks, lab reports, articles about significant events, and so on. I typically dread reading anything school related, but as a freshman in college it’s more interesting than …show more content…
It’s an article written by Frank Bruni discussing the issue on the exhaustion of kids due to the pressure of school, “Today’s Exhausted Superkids.”
In the article, Bruni addresses the lack of sleep college and high school students obtain due to high anxiety. Bruni states that this anxiety is due to working about “acing the exam, burnishing the transcript, keeping up with high-achieving peers.” This is true and I know having been a high school student and now currently a college student. Almost everyone I talk to is stressed about something in college. The homework we have to do in college its overwhelming. When I was in high school I was overwhelmed at times too, but no this much. The best comparison of high school to college I can give is this. High school is like a gentle breeze on a mid summers day while college is a massive hurricane that never stops. You’ll get a break in the storm, but it’s so minuscule it doesn’t matter. I don't mean to alarm anyone and I recommend you still go to college, but don't come in thinking it’s a walk in the park because you don’t have classes everyday. Now Bruni’s article is situational and not always true. For example, I’m a pre-vet student and I’m required to take a minimum of sixteen credit hours (unless

Throughout elementary school reading was my biggest passion, but as I began competing on upper-level athletic teams and participating in academic competitions I lost time for reading, and my passion dissipated. I enrolled in this course because it is a required general education course for business majors, not expecting it to have the beneficial impact it did. Interpretation of Literature taught me to critically analyze novels and short stories, as well as changed my perception of poetry and readings assigned as coursework. As a first-semester freshman at the University of Iowa I did not know what to expect from college classes—specifically my general education courses such as the Interpretation of Literature. Although I knew I enjoyed reading, I also knew I did not like reading books that were assigned for classes because I found them…

Personally, college is a different environment compared to what high school students are used to. College teaches students to be more independent relying on ourselves to take care of our studies and learning process. Take High School for example. High School teachers will constantly remind students of deadlines for assignments while professors could care less if students missed the deadline. Because college students are considered more “mature”, students are required to manage their own time checking due dates for each class themselves.…

I was now attending college and my class didn’t start until nine-thirty, there was no rush. Although mornings as a high schooler felt like a nightmare to me, to others college is their nightmare came to life. College life is interestingly very different from high school life especially in the area of finance, time, and independence. Biggest and most noticeable idea that comes to mind when hearing “high school and college”, is of course no other than money difference. High schools tend to be free and even those that are not, still do not compare to University rates.…

I had not thought about my reading habits until reading this chapter. Of course, I knew that reading is an essential part of many courses. During high school I had experienced many different kinds of reading — from history texts to mathematics explanations to research for a variety of papers, along with reading for pleasure. However, looking back, I do not think that I truly committed my self to learning what I was reading. Rather, I would read enough to complete the assignment, and maybe revisit the material just before the test.…
