In the short story, “Today Will Be a Quiet Day” by Amy Hempel, the brother and sister have an odd relationship. They both fight and argue with each other often. Throughout the story, they disagree on many topics, which include food choice, driving, and feeding the cat. Their relationship doesn’t change. The brother seems to have a fiendish sense of humor. For instance, at the beginning he states, “I think if the quake hit now the bridge would collapse and the ramps would be left.” Here, the boy seems to be not afraid of death. Instead, he wants to frighten his sister. The boy also had a friend who was in a mental institute. His friend ended up jumping from the window and committing suicide. However, the boy does not show any emotions towards

The title of this particular art piece comes from a blues song, “Good Chib Blues”, “and like the blues, this monumental collage by Romare Bearden derives its power from repetitions, multiple meanings, and the layered associations of its imagery” (www.nga.gov). Lauren Gunderson’s play Silent Sky tells a story of the influential astronomer Henrietta Leavitt in her path to overcome a male-dominated world and workplace to discover a means to measure the distance of stars. I loved the play itself. I felt immersed in the performance of the excellent actresses and actor who made me laugh and cry. The scenes in which they were looking at the sky were beautiful; the lighting was breathtaking, especially at the end of the play. Multiple piano pieces including Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ helped place an underlying somber mood when appropriate.…

On September 16th, 2015 at 7:30 PM in Williams Hall, I attended the screening of the film She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry by Mary Dore, a . This film was a documentary that followed through the history of various remarkable women who were a part of the women’s movement between 1966-1971. I was a bit curious on what the film would be like, only knowing what the title of the screening was, but I was not disappointed by the amount of respect I gained for the women who took a part of this documentary and the history they had to go through to make a change in the world as it is today.…

    (1) Love and Mercy the 2014 film directed by Bill Pohlad follows the life of the beloved Beach Boy Brian Wilson. (2,5) A shot in the film that captures the essence of the motion picture is pool shot where Brian has his eyes wide open bubbled streaming out of his nose as if he is drowning, which could ironically foreshadow his brother’s drowning not depicted, but mentioned in the movie. This is the essence of the film because Brian his entire life was drowning under the pressure of his stardom and especially the pressure of his musical gift. The heavy use of the blue; the blue water, the blue pool walls, Brian’s blue swim bottoms, sets the scene up with an eerie calm.…

Music is defined as "The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds to produce beauty of form, harmony, melody, rhythm, and expressive content." But music isn't really a science, we can all create music. What one person perceives to be beautiful in the terms of music, may be seen as screeching Devil’s music to others. Music is more than a science or art; it is expression, and it is soul. Any man or woman with a tone deaf partner knows how crazy someone can sound while singing.…

Once I was finished reading essays from NPR’s series “This I Believe” I found that the essay “Tomorrow will be a better day” by Josh Rittenberg to be extremely entertaining whereas some other essays lacked the ability to keep me interested. It managed to maintain my interest while still showing to be a great essay to read and analyze. The reason that I believe this is due to the fact that it does well when it comes to the point of grabbing attention with word choice, the way Rittenberg keeps readers focused, and his ability to paint a detailed picture for the reader. Rittenberg does extremely well keeping the reader focused and interest by the words he chooses like instead of energy shortage he uses “devastating energy crisis” or instead of…
