Lisa Nagele-Piazza attended the March 10, 2017 American Bar Association’s Occupational Safety and Health Law Midwinter panel discussion. The focus of the meeting was about the new standards issued by The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Some of the new standards introduced include placing limits on post-accident drug-testing programs and having certain measures in place for protecting employees from silica and beryllium exposure. Based on these changes, employers will have to revise their workplace safety policies to comply. I had the opportunity of being able to attend and observe The Serenity Seekers, an open Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) twelve step meeting. Upon arrival, I received a warm welcome by many different group members. They introduced themselves to me and one of the members even brought me pamphlets that provided me with information regarding what their A.A. program entailed. At first, I was apprehensive about going to an A.A. meeting; however, the members were all accepting of my presence, which made me feel comfortable. By accepting me, the members were displaying cohesiveness, the primary therapeutic factor allowing A.A. members to feel a sense of belonging, acceptance, and validation amongst the group.…
My Alcoholics Anonymous meeting took place in 202 W. Broadway, Anaheim. The whole AA meeting lasted about an hour thirty minutes. The building seems to be an old church that no longer is being used. On Thursday October 5th, I was invited to participate in an IEP team meeting as the regular education teacher. This student has down syndrome, identified at birth, and is receiving services as intellectually disabled. This student is in a self-contained classroom therefore, his current teacher served as the special education teacher for the purposes of this meeting. According to Boyles (2004), “teachers talk with students to monitor their progress as well as to set goals and help them solve problems” (p.75). Teachers should conduct writing conferences in order to assess and evaluate the writing progress of their students. The purpose of writing conferences is finding the strengths and weaknesses of their writing to improve and develop the skills the student already has. Depending on the students writing the teacher facilitates interventions to improve the students writing skills. Teachers should frequently plan writing conferences to check-in on their students and the progress they have made.…
The CADA Conference was very influential on me and my beliefs on how to create a better community on campus. I noticed many different things on my trip to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. I would suggest this trip to future ASB members because of how many ASB groups relate to our own. These students at this event relate to us, because of their leadership skills, school spirit, and creative ideas. Alcoholics Anonymous is recovery group for those suffering with an alcohol addiction. Its program is mainly focused on abstaining from alcohol and achieving sobriety, but also puts emphasis on spirituality and comradery with other members as a form of a family and accountability partners. On Friday, October 28, 2016, I attended my very first open meeting for Overeaters Anonymous located in the Beebe Memorial CME Temple next to a church in 3900 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, CA at 6pm. This was the first time in a long time that I felt welcomed into a community of people whom I had just met. I arrived thirty minutes before the meeting and spoke to Louis, the meeting advisor for the night. I let him know I was a student who was taking a class on Addiction and wanted to know if it was okay if I sit in the meeting that night. Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader.
