Tobias Wolff's Hunters In The Snow

“Hunters in the Snow’s” irreverent and cynical tone was developed by the elements that Tobias Wolff used in this story. These elements include symbolism, point of view, characterization, plot, and theme. The story is based around a hunting trip of three men: Tub, Kenny, and Frank. In the beginning the narrator describes a moment when Tub was about to get ran over by his “friends.” Tub gets in the truck and they head to the woods. They are hunting for deer, but eventually it begins a hunt for something else. Throughout the story a flaw is mentioned in every man and the reader realizes after all that Tub, Frank, and Kenny are not truly friends. As Kenny is bleeding out in the bed of his own truck Frank and Tub do not pay any attention to him and get lost on their way to the hospital.
Theme is one of the most important elements that helped to develop tone in Wolff’s story. While reading the story Wolff makes it know that all the men have flaws and imperfections are the basis of what makes us human. Normally society claims that having flaws

From the title “Hunters in the Snow” readers can assume that the story will take place in a cold and snowy area; maybe in the woods because they are hunters. When it is cold and snowy in most places it means that it is winter. Winter has a meaning deeper than just being a season. It stands for death and resentment which plays a great role in this short story. Death is prevalent in this story; Kenny kills a dog then threatens to kill Tub. Tub, then in fear, and also with his bottled up resentment toward his “friends” shoots Kenny and injures him enough that he has to be checked into the hospital. The last sentence of the story mentions that Tub and Frank became lost, making it obvious that Kenny is going to die. Death is a serious subject, especially when it is a friend dying, but due to Frank and Tub’s lack of seriousness about Kenny’s injury Wolff is able to create the irreverent

Mirta Ojio’s book Hunting Season, Immigration and Murder in an All-American Town is based on a true story of an immigrant’s murder that turned a small American town on Long Island village of Patchogue into a war zone for immigration rights. In this critical reflection paper, I will discuss and analyze three key issues or themes that were represented in the Hunting Season and elaborate how these concepts connect with those of Governing Immigration through Crime by Dowling and Inda. The first concept is that of the Membership Theory, a theory which “limits individual rights and privileges to the members of a social contract between the government and the people” (Dowling & Inda,2013). The Membership theory often marks out boundaries of who is an accepted member of society and who isn’t, which was demonstrated in Hunting Season when Marcelo Lucero traveled from Ecuador to Long Island.…

The novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton has an extensive amount of imagery, many scenes are accompanied by descriptions of the bitter winter that encompasses the town. Even the name of the town that the characters inhabit, “Starkfield”, contributes to this imagery. In the novel, Ethan Frome is no longer in love with his wife, Zeena, but now yearns for her younger cousin, Mattie Silver. During the harsh winter that the main story takes place in, Mattie is a warm and comforting presence to Ethan in contrast to his ill wife who seems as cold as the weather described by the author. Each winter scene described can also be interpreted as one of the many reminders Ethan has of his wife’s presence and the marriage he feels is an inescapable prison.…

The novel, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer, is a riveting, cautionary tale about the death of Chris McCandless, a young man who embarks on a journey to Alaska to seek the truth of happiness through the solitude of nature and free himself from the constraints of society. No doubt, the ongoing theme throughout Krakauer’s novel is the dysfunctional father-son relationship between Chris and his dad. In fact, McCandless died before he had the chance to grow out of his anger. Into the Wild examines the fatal expedition of Chris McCandless as he breaks all ties from society and challenges his ability to survive in the wilderness. Through the use of primary sources, situational irony, and syntax, Krakauer thoroughly captures the compelling tragedy of Chris McCandless.…

Opposition is Just an Idea “The Bear” written by William Faulkner is a short story told through the eyes of the main character, Isaac “Ike” McCaslin. The short story portrays how “Ike’s childhood is structured on the promise and then the reality, of the participating in the autumnal hunt in the big woods” ultimately to capture the bear named Old Ben (Anna Priddy Go Down, Moses). Through symbolism, characterization, and imagery, William Faulkner proves that one should not let opposing views alter his thinking. Within “The Bear,” Faulkner uses symbolism to show how Ike has grown as a character and how he does not let the views of others change what he believes.…
