Throughout my childhood, I have always looked up to those who have been part of an elite organization, such as National Honor Society. When I received the application I was proud that my determination had paid off and I was now eligible to join National Honor Society. Before I moved to Miles I was part of the National Junior Honor Society, it was an inspiring occurrence that led me to become more involved in my community. I was able to help in Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and visit a Nursing Home. I now have the chance to join and help a community that has offered me great opportunities.…
This experience changed my life because it showed me how powerful and humbling it can be to represent your community. Whether I liked it or not, I was thrust into the role of representing over 11,000…
Remembering an Event I have been in scouts almost my whole life. I have even achieved the highest rank in boy scouts which is known as Eagle Scout. When I was trying to become an Eagle Scout I had to do many things, but one of the many was a project. The project I had picked was meant to help others in the community.…
I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…
For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…
The Humans of Longview project was one of the project that I was really apprehensive about as I dislike talking to strangers, and it makes me uncomfortable. When the assignment was announced, I was afraid that I would not be able to approach strangers as I have been told that my countenance scared people. As a result, I spent almost two month thinking about the project and how I would approach my first stranger. I thought about the various questions I could ask people. I even thought about the questions that would be appropriate to the age group.…
The college campus offered me a variety of activities to collaborate with my peers. Although I lived with many students, the…
When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…
My project consisted of attending a worship service different than that my own. I chose to follow a friend to a non-denominational sect of religion at a local church called, Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia in Laredo, Texas. This opportunity was chosen because I had made a promise to my friend to at least attend one service to see the differences between the traditional Roman Catholic services compared to this non-denominational service. At the very beginning I was rather apprehensive because of my original upbringing to Catholicism and the fact that I was attending service I was not familiar with.…
I wasn't sure at all of what I wanted to do for my senior project at the beginning of the school year but I knew i had to figure it out quick. The only thing i knew is that i wanted it to involve kids. At first I was hoping to volunteer with special needs kids at the Swindells Resource Center through providence. That unfortunately was not going to be possible because of scheduling issues.…
In english class we did a project that took up all of the second semester. It was called the civil rights project and we had to get in groups. For the project we had to find a way to get involved with our community and help out in anyway we could. My team decided to get people to write letters to congressman about immigration and the deportation that's been happening. We used the school to host our event but first we had a lot of planning to do.…
I started to get a group of people who can come together once a week to study and get helped in the tutoring center. As a student worker, I have many new friend that I meet each day and learn how to connect with students and enjoy our time together. I remember my dad used to help out the community with my sibling one a month to clean up the neighborhood with other few people that lives nearby my parents’ house. One day, my dad was at work and they came to ask if he could help. He wasn’t home…
Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
