Out of the 42 million adult smokers in the United States, nearly 16 million live with a smoking related disease, about 480,000 deaths are caused from cigarette smoking, and 42,000 deaths are caused by secondhand smoking each year.1 Lifetime smoking usually begins around the age of 18. However, the average age kids start smoking is between 11 and 13 years old.2 The earlier the age a person begins smoking, the greater the risk the person has for smoking throughout their lifetime.
