When the smoker inhales all of those chemicals, it “harms nearly every organ of body” (CDC Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking.) First, when the smoke enter the mouth, it can damage the taste buds or teeth. If you look at long-term smokers, most of their teeth are yellow or rotted out. Once the smoke enters the throat, this is where the real damage starts. There are numerous cancers in the throat that are caused from cancer, like cancer of the larynx or esophageal cancer. Then, it enters the lungs. This is where the residue from the smoke lives. Tar. Tar is the black gross stuff that takes over the lungs of long-term smokers. From the lungs, the chemicals are absorbed into the blood and transported throughout the body. Some that the Lifetime and Wellness textbook include are strokes, mouth cancer, chronic lung diseases, heart attacks, ulcers, circulatory diseases, various cancers, and lung cancer. Lung cancer is the biggest of them all. According to “The Dangers of Smoking” article, “[s]moking causes nearly nine out of ten cases of lung cancer” (2004.) Lung cancer is the leading death cancer. In 2012 alone, it took 160,000 lives. The Lifetime and Wellness textbook states that women who smoke have a 79% risk for lung cancer and men have 90% risk for lung cancer. Thirdhand smoking is a completely new aspect to the argument. In a scholarly article titled, “Electronic Cigarettes and Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke: Two Emerging Health Care Challenges for the Primary Care Provider” written by Ware G Kuschner, he wrote that thirdhand smoking is “defined… as residual tobacco smoke contamination that remains after the cigarette is extinguished (Kuschner 2011.) This means the smoke that is exhaled from the smoker is then left on the walls and ceiling for years to come. Then, a child or adult touches those walls and absorbs the residue left over. This residue may be toxic. Kuschner also states that just ones cigarette residue “pay persist in ceiling tiles for up to 30 years. People may try every step they can not to be around smoke or even secondhand smoke, but thirdhand smoke proves that it is nearly impossible to completely eliminate yourself from it. Though the data they have is limited at this time, thirdhand smoking is definitely an upcoming health
