This ad is very creative in the message it's attempting to convey. It takes a tobacco companies' advertisements and cleverly uses it to present possible outcomes for smokers, or those that may decide to start smoking. Additionally, it adds subtle additions such as the glasses, which in the original ad suggested a level of coolness for smokers, and the wording of the Surgeon General's message typically attached to a pack of cigarettes. The author uses pathos to induce an emotional reaction, namely fear of cancer, as the overhaul ad suggests. It furthers this reaction with the use of the glasses and Surgeon General's message, suggesting that smoking is not cool, and that smoker's potential is impacted when deciding to smoke.…

This advertisement was published with the name “Refrescate este verano con J Balvin y Pepsi” (Refresh yourself this summer with J Balvin and Pepsi) on January 18th of this year. Pepsi makes an excellent use of pathos appeals in this commercial, since it makes the use of a famous Hispanic singer, J Balvin. The environment of this commercial is a warm day with traffic problems in a city. At the beginning, the characters seem to be bored because of the hot weather and the traffic in the city, but then J Balvin makes his appearance, and he begins to sing and share Pepsi sodas with everyone, and then the environment changes completely into a…

Advertisements are always full of propaganda, that's how they try to get you to buy their product. They bend the truth, or try to make things seems appealing. This is never more true than in the cigarette ads of the mid 1900’s. At first glance you can already see how things are warped, simply because we were taught better, but back then they didn’t know. It wasn’t until these ads were outlawed in some places that we began to see how false they really were.…

The girl is wearing the same shade of red as the text, implying that she too will fall to the tempting flavor of the Altoids. The couple also appears to have neat clothing, this seems out of place in an apartment such as the one depicted in the ad. This invites speculation on the viewer's part as to what they are doing in the first place. This suggests illicit activity and cements the similarity between the advertisement and sex, this will of course help sell the…

There seems to be a lot of direct and indirect messages at play in the ad, the messages have a way of catching the attention of the customers with the ad’s face value and subliminal messages. At times you may have made a purchase, whether it be small or big, and wondered why you bought it. In the advertising industry, it would make sense to go to some extremes to be the company that is remembered over the rest of the competition the creators of this ad seemed to have these extremes in spades. In the article “From the Physician to the Marlboro Man: Masculinity, Health, and Cigarette Advertising in America, 1946-1964” the authors Cameron White, John L. Oliffe, and Joan L Bottorff discuss the changing of American masculinity ideals after WWII and how they changed over time based on how cigarette advertisements changed over time. He starts by describing what makes a cigarette so powerful as a commodity. Commodities, the authors argue, are full of values and can change a person’s self-identity. This means that the values and ideals that a cigarette is shown to have the consumer will be drawn to the product to show they have the same values of the product.…

One last thing that caught my attention was how the woman looks. Her skin smooth, and sweaty and bare-chested. This implies that as the scent of the fragrance is going to lure the attraction of women towards whoever is putting it on.
