Why We Should Smoking Be Illegal

We have all heard of the horrible side effects of smoking cigarettes for most of our lives. For the past several decades, there have been numerous anti-tobacco campaigns warning people about the harm they are bringing to themselves and others. Although we know the risks associated with cigarettes, there are still so many people today who do damage to their bodies by smoking. We must ask ourselves why nothing is being done to ban something so toxic. There is, however, a simple solution to this problem: The production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal. In a world so concerned with ‘going green’ and being ‘eco-friendly,’ it is astonishing that so many people would knowingly put such toxic substances in their bodies. However, when one understands that it is not simply a “bad habit,” but an addiction, it suddenly becomes clearer. The CDC says, “There is no risk free level of exposure.” (qtd. in Licht, Hull, and Ballantyne 174) This epidemic of cigarette smoking is killing people worldwide, and yet we act as though it is an acceptable part of societies and cultures everywhere. While it is not feasible to believe that the world in its entirety can be rid of cigarettes, we should start in our own country.
