First, I believe that the Civil War was inevitable because the American South became so dependent on slavery. Many times in history we have seen slave-owners be opposed to slavery, but still continue keeping slaves, because they are think their lifestyle is reliant on their slaves. The entire society was so reliant on slavery that it required a monstrous event to completely abolish it from society. No proposition that could have been offered could have satisfied both sides of the argument. From the landing of the very first slave ship on American soil, there was always a conflict between pro- and anti-slavery forces, and this conflict could never be settled without a huge explosion, like the Civil War. Perhaps this culmination could have been less bloody if it had occurred before tensions were so
