Picture this, your friend is stressed out and can’t take much more stress until he gets really sick. Meanwhile you’ve been feeling sick and go to get it checked out and the doctor diagnoses you with a disease or says you have kidney failure. How are you going to tell your friend, are you going to lie and keep quiet until he isn’t stressed, or are you going to risk their safety for your sake. I firmly believe lying is okay and acceptable in our society.

I personally think lying is acceptable if it creates more positive results than negative ones. For example, lying about your baby sitters curfew to get out of a boring party won't leave a negative impact on your host. On the other hand, if you told the host you are bored and do not want to stay any longer would make the host feel bad or put them down. Another way to say this is lying can hold friendships together when used correctly. In addition to this, Bella DePaulo a professor studying lying says honesty can’t happen without compromising some things. For example a friendship or relationship. Also it can start family problems if all you tell is honesty.

If Harold didn’t take this action his daughter could’ve gotten sick. Instead Harold went through his kidney tumor treatment and told her about it after he was better. These all show how lying can save lives and is crucial to

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

Relationships are built on a foundation of trust, and so most any reasonable person would assume that a reasonable statement made by a friend would be truthful in nature. Several ethical issues arise in this situation, and each shall be explored in turn. Is lying ever ethically just? Yes.…

In an interview with Robin Roberts, Robert Feldman, someone who has researched the subject of lies and deception for twenty plus years, said “We do it because it’s easy and because we get away with it and because it helps us in life” (Firestone). The human mind often assists in lying by helping the liar believe that by not telling the truth they are protecting someone else or themselves (Firestone). People are able to put their minds at ease when lying by convincing themselves that it is not that bad and that they are not doing anything wrong (Anonymous). It is not uncommon for people to only share information that they deem “safe” to tell and not tell everything; that is still a lie. It is a lie of omission, which at times is the worst kind of lie (Firestone).…
