To What Extent Is Hamlet A Tragic Hero

The play Hamlet by William Shakespeare tells the story of a tragic hero named Hamlet. Not just any character in a piece of literature can obtain the title of a tragic hero. For a character to develop into a tragic hero they need a sympathetic quality to them.

Hamlet feels depressed for the whole play. Only two months earlier, Hamlet’s father passed away, this contributes to his depression. “But two months dead-nay, not so much not two-/ so excellent a king…” (1. 2.140-141). Everyone deals with death at one point in their lifetime.This makes the reader feel sympathetic towards him. This contributes to the play by helping it make sense. Since Hamlet’s in a vulnerable state, it make sense as to why he listens to the ghost of his dead father. Getting revenge for his father’s death grew into the only thing keeping Hamlet alive.

Hamlet´s father only passed away two months ago and his mother already moved on. Hamlet’s mother can marry anyone, but she went with her dead husband’s brother, Claudius.This added fuel to the fire. Hamlet’s hatred for Claudius only adds to his disgust of their marriage.“A murderer and a villain,/ A slave that is not twentieth part the title/ of your precedent lord…”(3.4.107-109). Hamlet's mother remarrying also contributes to his depression. Hamlet becomes suspicious that Claudius killed his father since the ghost of his dead father told him so. The act of getting revenge for his father’s death weighs heavily on Hamlet. This contributes to the overall meaning of the play by developing the plot.
