Main Causes of the United States Entering WW1 On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany, saying, “The world must be made safe for democracy” (President Woodrow Wilson’s War Message to Congress). World War One was a war fought between 1914 and 1918. The allies were Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States. These countries fought against the Central Powers which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The United States was trying their hardest to remain neutral, but this plan unfortunately failed because of these three major events. These three major events were the sinking of the Lusitania, the Zimmerman Telegram, and unrestricted submarine warfare. The sinking of the Lusitania led to President Woodrow getting the United States involved in WW1. On May 7, 1915, the British passenger ship the Lusitania was sunk by a German Uboat killing 1,195 people on people on board. The Zimmerman Telegram was issued from the German Foreign Office in January 1917 and proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event of the U.S’s entering WW1 against Germany. The Zimmerman Telegram Note from the German Minister to Mexico stated that “you are instructed to inform the President of Mexico of the above in the greatest confidence as soon as it is certain that there will be an outbreak of war with the United States” (Zimmerman Note - Digital History). This piece of evidence is important because it shows that the united States obviously had a reason to be concerned about the ZImmerman Telegram. Germany had an alliance with Mexico.
