At this period in history, many European nation were in competition with other nations. Some of the main countries that were competing against each other were Britain and Germany. Many people joined the military for Britain because citizens wanted to fight for their country and wanted to represent it by winning. Britain had the strongest army on land and on water. Fighting under-equipped opponents in far-off places were usually brief and easy to win for Europe's Great Powers--Britain, Russia, or Prussia. When Germany was formed, nationalism was already backed by their militarism and they were already in competition with Britain. Kaiser Wilhelm II was the leader of this young nation and being a nationalist, he was obsessed with military power and imperial expansion. Wilhelm was very proud of his country's achievements but was nervous about the future. He was envious of other powers and seeking national success. Wilhelm had thought that the main obstacle to German expansion was Britain and its vast empire along with it’s great naval power. An alliance is a political, military, or economic agreement between two or more countries. The support between alliances included financial and logistical backing-- like the supply of materials or weapons. Alliances may also form because the nations are in need of trade agreements, and military mobilization. This suggested that if one country declared war on another then their alliances would also have to enter the war. The nations would sign a treaty to agree to these things. One of the main alliances was the Triple Entente alliance between Britain, France, and Russia. This alliance empowered these countries to better defend themselves and further advance their economic and political interests.
