To The Promised Water Monologue

In 2012 I arrive at a place called First Stage at 3:30 in a room filled with over 150 kids. I have to check in at a desk and a lady takes my picture and then gives me 2 forms to fill out. I give them to my mom as I am too jittery to write or even think. I’m auditioning for a play called To The Promised Land, and I’ve fallen in love with it’s script. At this moment there is nothing more that I want them to be cast as the main character named Ruth. The only problem is that I'm shy, I’m short , and I suck at acting, at least I believed I did. An hour later I am seperated from my mother and filed into a room with over 100 children. We're all crammed in one small room sitting patiently, but impatiently quietly watching as each kid gets up and performs the same memorized lines for the casting director and a panel of three other people: the Writer, Director, and an Intern. …show more content…
The kids in the room with me are more experienced in acting and they already know how to do everything. I look around and see one kid pulling a chocolate bar and water out of his backpack, “Why didn’t I remember to bring that?” I think. It’s now been 2 hours since I’ve first arrived and I still haven't said my monologue or really spoken to anyone. At this point many kids have been told they can go home, which in actor terms means that they're not needed for any part. I smile at this but immediately feel bad that this makes me happy. After a few more minutes a man in his late 40s comes to talk to me and seven other girls who are left in the room. I soon learn that these girls are going for the same role that I want, and the only thing setting us apart is our height and talent. “I’m screwed” I

I believed what others said and that caused to date the biggest regret I have. The part was given to another girl who was in the program and I acted like it did not bother me. My family did not end up moving, so I would have been able to do the play. That is what leaves a sour taste in my mouth that I could have successfully played the part, and executed the role better then the other girl who’s singing voice was not as powerful as mine. I did learn from this experience that I should go for the things I wish to and not to let my suggestion or others hold me back.…

I don't think I'll ever forget myself as I was just then; my legs sprawled up on the picnic table and back arched to try and conform to the rigid wooden chair that would never be comfortable. My eyes were shut, and my sigh was soft. My chest hurt, but not in a broken-hearted kind of way. It was actually physical, but I tried to ignore it. I felt like crying for no reason, but I didn't.…

I was extremely excited to watch Brooklyn College’s rendition of Speech and Debate. The reasoning behind my excitement was that whilst reading the play written by Stephan Karam, I quickly realized that it’s humor and authenticity were aspects that I typically enjoy to a great extent in stories, whether that be in the form of a television show, movie, or play. I also felt that I was readily prepared to watch the show meticulously and focus on its acting and casting aspects. I chose the acting facet of the production to be the focal point of my review yet again because I understand that I could have pushed further and been more detail oriented when writing my previous review. Brooklyn College’s Speech and Debate had a small cast of four actors.…

The responses to the play were appropriate and positive, and the performers received a deserved standing ovation at the end of the…
