In 2014, sixty-two Teaneck High School, New Jersey students were arrested for vandalizing their school as their senior prank. The vandalizing included urinating all over the school’s hallways. When questioned, the students’ excuse was, “It’s just a senior class prank.” This is an example of acting without thinking about consequences. In her essay, “The Terrible Teens”, author Elizabeth Kolbert uses anecdotes to magnify the many questionable activities in which teenagers take part, and rhetorical devices to simplify what neurologists say regarding teenage brains.…

In James W. Loewen’s Lies My Teachers Told Me, Loewen contradicts information and the way it is presented in average high school American history textbooks. United States History is taught in American high schools to inform students of the mistakes made in the past, hoping they will learn from them and not make those mistakes again. Traditionally, American students are taught the history of their nation by reading from textbooks that list and group together important facts, dates, and events. Unfortunately, students relentlessly read these groupings of facts, not taking much consideration to the content they are reading. Frequently, textbooks use heroification, archetypes, and the absence of ambiguity to cloud and omit history.…

Introduction to Analyzing Arguments: On Lies My Teacher Told Me Lies My Teacher Told Me a nonfiction book by James W. Loewen goes over the topic of American history, and throughout the book explains and provides evidence as to how history in the US is glorified and ignores important pieces of information that would expose the flaws with many of US events, and VIPs. In addition, Loewen describes how American textbooks can often set back students, holding them from learning the truth about their country, the real way that history occurred. Loewen talks about a variety of people from US history, such as Christopher Columbus, and even Helen Keller, attempting to inform the readers of the not so pure background of these American figures. This reading was particularly interesting because the author was explaining her family’s tradition of, ‘”don’t tell”. She spent a lot of time describing her family’s photos and as describe in Storycraft Chapter 6, she brought scenes to life. Her description of the picture was vividly detail that I felt like I was at the actual wedding experiencing what she described. One quote that stood out to me is, “Even at a wedding- a joyous moment of optimism, of promise, and faith in the future- Jews are commanded to remember the past, the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD.” (Sommers 336).…

We all know that cyberbullying is a major factor to teenage and adolescent suicide due to all of the social media outlets. Adolescent egocentrism describes the phenomenon during which adolescents cannot differentiate between their own perception of themselves and the perception of others (Elkind, 1967). It has been looped in with Piaget’s cognitive development theory (Kesselring & Müller, 2010). Though there have been many criticisms over specific details in Adolescent egocentrism regarding Piaget’s theory, people generally seem to agree on two subtopics of adolescent egocentrism: imaginary audience and personal fable. Many sources also agree on a single constant: egocentrism affects adolescents more than people in other phases of their lives. Imaginary audience is when an adolescent believes that everybody is watching her and that she is under constant scrutiny,…

Engaging in a passionate argument in which your opinions and evidence are heard and are responded to with equal vigor is a situation most people have experienced at least once. Being able to express one's thoughts openly and receive others’ opinions in return induces discussion that is in-depth and meaningful. Unfortunately, this passionate and argumentative type of conversation seems to be dying out. Both Molly Worthen and Deborah Cameron address the causes of this important issue in their articles "Stop Saying 'I Feel Like'" and "Just Don't Do It.” Worthen finds that the expression “I feel like” waters down the true…

The abuse of alcohol by teenagers is a rapidly growing problem. In this day and age, alcohol is presented to the public in glamor of a guaranteed good time, but does not show the consequences that come with it, including other problems outside of the law. Teenagers involved in the consumption of alcohol often times begin to see a decline in their academic performance. Failing grades due to the lack of sleep over the weekend because of partying takes a greater toll on the body than teenagers may expect. Damon And Pythias Analysis

Between “Damon and Pythias” and “Two Friends”, I believe that “Two Friends” presented friendship more realistically. The fact that “Damon Pythias” is a Greek legend, meaning that it’s an exaggerated story, makes its presentation of friendship a lot less realistic. On the other hand, “Two Friends” presented friendship more realistically since the author left a lot of hints, which foreshadowed the developments of the story. For example, it may seem unrealistic that M. Sauvage and M. Morissot went fishing in spite of the danger from the German troops nearby. However, this is realistic since in the previous paragraph, it’s mentioned that “They went into a little café and had an absinthe, then resumed their stroll along the sidewalks.…
