When girls are young, they like to fantasize about getting married one day. This fantasy becomes more real as they grow older and relationships become more serious. As women, they realize what qualities they want their husband to have and look for serious relationships. Poetry is a way for women, and men, to show their true feelings about their significant others. Poets can express their love for others and their marriage. While reading poems, two of them each stood out as an ideal of a good marriage, including “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and “[Let me not to the marriage of true minds]”, and these choices say something about oneself. First of all, “To My Dear and Loving Husband” is a poem written from a wife to her husband. She talks about how happy she is with her husband. The title also suggests that he is loving and treats her well. Thinking of a future husband, one wants him to be kind and loving just like the speaker’s. After reading the poem, one can tell that the wife is obviously in love with him and seems head over heels for him even after being married. When married, one wants to have an everlasting love like the speaker has. In lines three and four, the wife states that she is happier than any other women. Someone who can make one laugh and happy is someone one would want to spend the rest of their life with. The speaker says at the end that even after death, their love will still live on and this is what one would like to imagine in a marriage. Bradstreet’s poem of a wife loving her husband would be exactly what one wants a future marriage to be like and reinforces one’s views of marriage. Also, Shakespeare’s poem “[Let me not to the marriage of true minds]” tells the truth about marriage. Lines two through four talk about how love is not really love if it changes when the significant other changes or leaves when the loved one leaves. In a future marriage, one does not want someone who will leave easily. A future husband and wife shall stick together through anything and adapt to each other’s changes without changing their love for one another. Growing up in a loving family, one definitely wants a future husband to be the same way. Choosing these poems shows what one wants in life. In reality, one plans to spend the rest of their life with a husband. One’s future husband should be someone who can make them happy and love them like in Bradstreet’s poem. It also shows that one is a realist. Marriage is not always going to be perfect, and one knows that, so one wants someone who will stay with said person through thick and thin as Shakespeare mentions.
