In TKAM, Atticus has morals that he abides to, and same with family, he loves his family. In TKAM, Atticus explains to Jem about why he made him read to Mrs. Dubose. It states in the novel ¨Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin, but you begin, anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do¨(pg 149 Lee). Atticus always taught his children to respect everyone no matter what they were ( race or looks). So he values family because he cares about his children enough to teach them about ethics and morals. Atticus also explains to his kids to respect other people and their decisions. In TKAM it states¨You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”(pg 81 Lee). In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus believes that we should try to love everybody, and respect them. Atticus was always honest with his kids so that they kept a good bond with each other. Another way Atticus shows the social value of love towards his children is his love for them. In TKAM, it states ‘’Heck," Atticus's back was turned. "If this thing's hushed up it'll be a simple denial to Jem of the way I've tried to raise him. Sometimes I think I'm a total failure as a parent, but I'm all they've got. Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him... if I connived at something like this, frankly I couldn't meet his eye, and the day I can't do that I'll know I've lost him.
