I remember the day just like it was yesterday, the day Tom Robinson died. I woke up, something was wrong, something terrible has happened. The quiet neighborhood, no sound of birds chirping, and no sound of children playing outside. I bounced out of bed, threw on my apron and walked to the Finches house. As I strolled down the damp, cold sidewalk, I passed the knothole in the Radley tree, the crumbling faded flowers in Mrs. Dubose's yard, and the dirt filled tire swing swaying in the wind in the Finches yard. “A Negro’s raped Mayella Ewell!” she exclaimed as sweat dripped down her red face, not even acknowledging that I was in the room. She was also the town gossip so I know for a fact that Miss Stephanie had been running all over the block, spreading the news. I had recognized the name; Mayella Ewell’s little brother went to school with Scout. “Tom Robinson!” Miss Stephanie uttered. Tom then told the story of what really happened that day. “Mayella summoned me one day while I was walkin’ by her house. Mayella told me that a door was falling off its hinges and she need me to fix it. When I checked, the hinges were okay, and she slammed the door behind me. Mayella"... grabbed me round th' legs. She scared me so bad. Mayella, she--she hugged me. She hugged me round the waist. Then, Mayella kissed me on the side of the face. She said she had never kissed a man before"... an' she might as well kiss a negro. She says what her papa do to her don't count. She asked me to kiss her back. I say Miss Mayella lemme outa here. When I asked Mayella to "let me pass," Bob Ewell showed up and told Mayella “I'll kill ya."” Tom
