Harper Lee uses characters and events in To Kill a Mockingbird to show courage throughout the book. Courage is shown through the characters by having them do the right thing even though it may go against society. Lee shows courage with the events by making them situations where not everyone is in agreement and the characters have to choose the right decision. They have to be brave and stand up for their beliefs even when the situation is very hard. In the book, Harper Lee, displays the theme of courage through Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch's actions and behaviors. First, is how Boo Radley shows courage in the book. Even though Boo Radley is a mysterious man, he still finds ways to show courage. “Inside were two scrubbed and polished pennies, one on top of the other”(Lee 46). This is an example because he starts leaving gifts for the kids and he has been inside his house for so long and has got enough courage to finally reach out to the kids in small ways. “‘Bob Ewell’s lyin’ on the ground under that tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck up under his ribs”(Lee 357). Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch are used by Harper Lee to display and demonstrate the theme of courage. The author has Boo Radley show courage by putting him in situations where he is coming out of his comfort zone and helping people. For Tom Robinson, Lee puts him in situations where he is discriminated because of his race, treated poorly, and is forced to live through it everyday. Atticus Finch is put into situations where he has to stand up for someone, help them out, and in some cases, he even protects them from a possible death.
