From the beginning of this story, the main theme develops within a select few characters, that theme is people are not what they seem to be. Atticus is one of these few charters, he is not like other dads in the Scouts neighborhood. He has high morals and treats everyone with respect that they deserve. He often says “You just hold your head up high and be a gentleman. Atticus would say”(Lee 115). He acts unnaturally to Jems standards because, he sits behind a desk all day, does not play football, reads in his chair and never goes hunting. So Jem thinks he is boring, that all changes when he sees his dad shoot a mad dog with the precision of a blade in a doctor's hand, and had the nickname “Deadshot” when he was a kid.
