In the passage from To Kill a Mockingbird, author Harper Lee uses a natural style through sentence structure and the narrator’s naivete to create the effect of relatability. Lee uses sentence structure in a realistic manner in order to convey the feelings of understanding and empathy. She uses short, choppy sentences, “Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty,” (1). This style of writing imitates the randomness of the human mind’s thoughts, allowing the reader to connect and empathize with the narrator.
