To Kill A Mockingbird Response Essay

To Kill A Mockingbird authored by Harper Lee is a well written representation of what our society is thought to be. In the duration of the book people are criticized for their race, or bad reputation and there are people who are only great in the mind. Overall this story has a great moral lesson of “don’t judge a book by its cover,” mainly because everyone in the town thought that Boo Radley was a villain of the story and killed his parents however in the end they notice that they are wrong. The story, which is narrated by Scout, began by talking about her father Atticus that makes a solid living in a old and tired town called Maycomb. Then goes on to talk about Boo Radley, Boo is a character that lives in a run down house in their neighborhood that has not been seen outside in fifteen …show more content…
Atticus’s brother Jack came to town for the week and called Atticus a “Nigger-lover” for taking the case. Many people in their town are upset with Atticus for representing a black man however Atticus, in his good heart, is sure that Tom is innocent. Because of the court case the Atticus took he is ridiculed and made fun of all because he is a white man representing a black man. “Around here once you have a drop of the Negro blood you are all black” (P.162). Scout has learned that Tom is being accused by Bob Ewell, the father of the daughter who he supposably raped. The reader already can tell that Tom, although is innocent, will be prosecuted as a guilty suspect so Harper Lee takes a turn of events and turned the tension to another part of the story. The facts of Tom Robinson is a great example of another theme shown in the novel. “Innocence over evil.” This works mainly because although Tom did not rape the girl however, Bob Ewell being the white man that he is got the benefit of the doubt and Tom received the verdict of being guilty because of

I am reading the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In the chapters sixteen through chapter twenty-three, Scout, Jem and Dill watch the trial of Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping Bob Ewell’s eldest daughter. Atticus, the defendant of Tom Robinson, lost the trial and Tom was brought to prison, where he attempted to escape, but was shot and killed. Although Tom was innocent, and Atticus proved that he was in the trial, the fact that he was a black man outweighed the fact that Bob Ewell was the one that beat Mayella, the victim of the supposed rape and the evidential beating. In this journal, I will be characterizing Tom Robinson and analyzing why Bob Ewell lied about his daughter’s attack.…

During the trial, Tom remains quiet, and he tries to run for his life because he has no faith in the judicial system. In Atticus’s words, “a court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up” (p.…

Atticus explains this to Scout, “The one place where a man ought to get a square deal, is in a courtroom, be he of any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box. As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men everyday of your life,” (Lee 252). For the first time in her life, Scout realizes, because of the trial, that there is bad in people, and the things that happen in the world, are not always…

When Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, many citizens are quick to decide that he is guilty just because of the color of his skin. It does not matter to them that there is concrete evidence pointing towards Tom’s innocence. The jury ultimately decides that Robinson is guilty, even though it is plain that he is not. After the trial, Atticus says to Scout and Jem, “In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins.” (251-252)…

Understanding perspective plays a central, critical role in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Lack of understanding is the cause of many of the main conflicts in the story. Understanding resolves these conflicts and makes the characters involved more mature and morally developed. Scout’s journey in To Kill A Mockingbird is closely tied to her understanding of other perspectives. At the beginning of the story, Scout is only six years old and displays immaturity typical of a child her age.…

Imagine that you are a black man that was caught at the scene of a crime that you did not commit, but you are to blame solely based on the color of your skin. Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. Tom being black and Mayella white, he is automatically convicted of that crime and sentenced to death. The authorities would take the word of Mayella over Tom any day. Scout and Jem are the children of Atticus Finch, the lawyer who is trying to defend Tom Robinson in the court.…

The accusations against the man are a sham, and are instigated by the Ewell family. The Finches are scrupulous unlike the Ewells. The man whose name is Tom Robinson is innocent, but because of racism in the town he is convicted guilty. The quote above is from Atticus and he is talking about how people in the town are so racist and blinded by hate that they cannot even see who is really guilty or innocent. “Atticus has used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret court of men’s hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella opened her mouth and screamed” (Lee 245). Although Tom had done no wrong against Mayella, his skin color mattered more to the jury than his right to a fair trial. It became clear to Scout how Maycomb thinks of negroes contemptuously. They sit in their own section of the courthouse, and live in their own separate part of town among themselves and the Ewell’s.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…

The author includes this theme to attempt to educate her readers that forming ideas about people, especially during a time of negative thinking towards a specific group of people, is not morally correct and people should make more of an effort to get to know someone before judgment. In a novel that attempts to lead people away from prejudgment of African American citizens, there are many cases in which African Americans are spoken negatively about without a reason. One of the main events that takes place in To Kill a Mockingbird is the trial between Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and Bob Ewell. Mr. Ewell claimed to have seen Tom Robinson raping Mayella, Bob’s daughter, and decided to take the case to court. Before the trial, Tom was in a jail cell in the middle of the town when a lynch mob approached.…

It is difficult for Tom because it is the 1930s in the South and Tom is black. People say very mean things to Tom and about Tom during the time of the trial. Mr. Gilmer suggests that Tom is guilty because he has a prior conviction. Mr. Gilmer says “‘What did the nigger look like when you got through with him?’... Atticus raised his head ‘it was a misdemeanor and it’s in the record’”(Lee 196).…
