This quote is all about perspective and how changing yours will help you to see things in a more positive light. This relates to Scout in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee because her perspective changes throughout the story. There are many catalysts that help Scout to change her perspective, and Miss Maudie Atkinson is one of them. Miss. Maudie’s compassion and wisdom helps scout to change her point of view about being a lady. Miss.Maudie’s compassion helps to set an example for Scout on how to act like a lady. She looked across the street at us and suddenly grinned 'Jem Finch' she called 'you devil, ring me back my hat sir!'" (Lee. Pg. 77) Miss.Maudie is joking around with the children and having fun with them. This is a compassionate and a vast contrast from the other ladies of Maycomb like Stephanie Crawford and Alexandra, who would both be extremely upset if their hat was on a snowman. Miss.Maudie shows Scout that she can be a lady without always being serious and stuck up all the time. After Miss.Maudie's house burns down, scout asks if she's grieving to this question she replies: "'Grieving, child? Why, I hated that old cow barn. Thought of settin' fire to it a hundred times myself, except they'd lock me up....Don't you worry about me, Jean Louise Finch. There are ways of doing things you don't know about. They realize that they should be proud of their father because he's a great lawyer and willing to fight for what was right while most lawyers at the time would not. Also after the trial Scout and Jem are feeling badly about how they lost the case and wondering why their father took the it in the first place. Miss. Maudie imparts this wisdom on them that "...some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your fathers one of them." (Lee pg. 244) Miss.Maudie is explaining to Scout and Jem that their father is such a great person, that he is willing to do things that others may not, out of the goodness of his heart. Atticus is probably not being rewarded a hefty sum to take on this case so he is doing the "unpleasant job" for justice. He risks loosing his reputation and is called horrible things by his own neighbors just so he can serve his duty to get justice for Tom Robinson.
