Harper Lee proves this statement through the brilliant piece of literature known as To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout Finch is a little girl who lives with her family in sleepy Maycomb County. Her whole world gets turned upside down when she is exposed to a series of events that teach her about compassion, racism, and most of all courage. Harper Lee has shown what real courage is through the extraordinary characters Scout, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus. Scout showed her bravery in many various ways throughout the novel. She literally fought for what she thought was right but was courageous enough to put her fists down and walk away when necessary. “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away,” (Lee 76). Scout shows her courage through walking away from a fight and shouldering the names that she was called, but she also was brave when she started to talk to Mr. Cunningham while a mob surrounded her. Scout Finch was proud of her quiet victories just like Mrs. Dubose. …show more content…

Mrs. Dubose was also brave every time she would voice her opinions to those who might not want to hear it. While Mrs. Dubose is one of the bravest people in the novel, Atticus was possibly the most

There are many pieces of evidence in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, but here are the ones that stand out the most throughout the book. For example, when Jem argues with Atticus about Mrs.dubose and how she is nothing like a proper lady should be, he says, “She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine, maybe...son, I told you that if you hadn’t lost your head I’d have you go read to her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. ”(Lee, 1960, p.149). One of the most significant quotes in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird was uttered by Scout Finch in chapter 23, when Scout disagreed with her brother in a crucial manner when she said “Naw, Jem, I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks” (Lee 227). This statement has more meaning to be uncovered than what is drawn from it when first read. The quote boldly deals with many of Lee’s themes of her novel, such as that racism classifies people into groups, innocence allows for idealized views, and that education can be used as a social construct. Lee uses Scout’s innocence to convey her message, as well as her conversation with Jem and earlier altercation with Aunt Alexandra to make her point.…
