Unlike your typical family with a father and a mother, Jem and Scout only have their father. This little twist in the story allows Scout and Jem to experience more than one or two parent figures in their lives. Atticus, being a single father, cannot do everything necessary to raise two kids by himself, so throughout the story Jem and Scout are exposed to many different mother figures such as Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie, and Calpurnia. Because of this, they become more well-rounded and knowledgeable to different perspectives and …show more content…
Scout drug her heels in the ground throughout the entire story with Aunt Alexandra not understanding the importance of being a lady. However, Scout did learn to respect her aunt, and began to see that being a lady was harder than it looked after watching Calpurnia and her aunt keep their composure after hearing about Tom Robinson’s death.
Miss Maudie acted as comforter and friend of sorts to Jem and Scout. She allowed them free reign of her yard (minus the flower beds), baked them cakes, and often watched over them as they played, and like Atticus, she also led by example. After her house burned down, she still kept a positive attitude and assured Scout that she was okay. Miss Maudie, was a gentle and warm person that acted as a safe zone for Scout and Jem and was company to them when they had no one else to hang out with.
Calpurnia was the main mother figure to Jem and Scout. She bathed them, feed them, and kept them in line when Atticus could not. She kept a balance between being strict and being kind, knowing exactly when to lay down the rules or bake crackle bread as comfort food for Scout. She also introduced them to a bit of the black culture when she took them to her church. This opened their eyes and gave them insight into the lives of the black people and introduced them to a new side of

Aunt Alexandra and Atticus didn’t always see eye to eye on how Scout should be raised. Since Atticus had been raising Scout alone since she was two, he had never forced her to act like a girl, as it was something he probably wasn’t familiar with and wouldn’t have been able to teach. He simply wished that Scout would make her own decisions and learn from her own experiences. Jem was taught by Atticus, since Atticus was a gentleman Jem simply had to observe. For Scout though, observing wouldn’t have been enough.…

She wants to teach Scout and Jem the ways of the world and the good in it. An example of this would be when Miss Maudie is teaching Scout that Atticus has a difficult job to do.…

The parents in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” differ from parents today. In chapter 10 Scout says that Atticus is different from the other parents because he doesn’t play poker, drink, fish or smoke, to Scout this is a bad thing but if she thought about it that’s a good thing because he isn’t gone every day playing poker or spending all his money on smokes and beer. This tells us most of the other parents smoke, drink, fish and go hunting. Parents still do these things but kids don’t think of that as a good thing like kids in the book do. In the book the parents also just let their kids roam free, I understand why they would because they didn’t have to worry about the stuff that we have to worry about today but still the kids are playing…

Specific tasks such as acting and dressing a certain way would have allowed women to be "proper" ladies. An example of a woman unlike the rest of the 1930s was the brazen, Miss Maudie from To Kill A Mockingbird, she was not the typical southern lady compared to women like Aunt Alexandra. She cared more about her azaleas and keeping away nut grass than men. To defy assumed roles for women she, was independent, spoke her mind, and admonished other women's mean gossip.
