Attention getter (McCabe #). In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee took events that happened in real life to create the book. The events it connects tom are the Jim Crow laws, mob mentality, and all the racism. One of the connections in the novel is the Jim Crow laws. The Jim Crow laws are a set of laws the made the whites superior to the blacks. Some people thought that they needed the laws because they believed that blacks should not be equal and that they are not human. One law was that the blacks could not vote. They could not show affection in public. If they did not follow the rules, they could be lynched, which includes hangings, burning alive, and shootings (Pilgrim). Mob Mentality is when a large group of people get together and the act differently than they would by themselves. An example is how if there is a party and one person starts drinking it could lead to a bunch of people starting to drink (smith). In the past Mob Mentality was present in the lynching in Indiana, where they hung two black kids. All the people where acting like nothing happing and they where casually standing around (“Strange fruit: anniversary”). In the photo it shows a bunch of people partying around the hanging bodies (Beilter). In the book there is problems with Mob Mentality. One example of Mob Mentality in the book is how Atticus sat outside the jail and a mob of men came to the jail to lynch Tom Robinson. If Atticus was not there to stop them then they would have killed Tom because they where not thinking independently because they where in a group just mindlessly acting.
