To Kill A Mockingbird Leadership Essay

My mom always says, “readers are leaders”. You don't need to be valedictorian or captain. You simply need to make your own discoveries, maintain your values and not take a back seat in this ride called life. These are attributes I believe I possess. If anyone asked me, "Sofia, what has helped you to become a leader and the person you are today?", I could say many things. However, there is one answer I’d mention without a doubt. I’d mention my love of reading. I started reading when I was four. One summer, when I was going into fifth grade, I wound up reading 27 books. That lit a spark in me. I cannot mention this trait without sharing my favorite book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee showed me I need to treat everyone equally and defend what I believe in. This influenced me to have an ethnically and religiously diverse group of friends while staying true to my values as a Christian and my Panamanian and Italian heritage. I may not stand for everything my friends do, but I like them for who they are and I don’t fixate on our dissenting opinions. Books such as A Raisin in the Sun and The Help furthered my respect and compassion for all people. I want people to not be scared to show who they are. As a minority myself, I’m proud of to say I’m a latina. That's why for any project I must do about myself I mention my faith and background. My mother came from Panama to America when she was 16 and became one of the most successful people I know, and I’m so proud. Mostly, I want to inspire others by my example so they too can have a diverse group of friends and truly get to know who people are at their core. As Atticus Finch wisely said, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in
