What makes someone resemble a mockingbird? The book To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee. This book, in the perspective of a young girl named Scout, is about her father Atticus having to defend a black man in court. This man’s name is Tom Robinson. He was falsely accused of raping a 19 year old girl who is part of a “white trash” family. Tom Robinson resembles the ultimate mockingbird because he is innocent, respectful, and harmless. Tom Robinson’s respect he shows to others makes him resemble a mockingbird. Tom shows his respect in the book when he is asked in court, “Were you paid for your services?” He said, “No suh, not after she offered me a nickel the first time” (Lee 256). This shows that Tom is willing to help without getting anything in return, which is very respectful of him. Mockingbirds, as stated in the book, are birds that make pretty music and only bring goodness in the world. Tom Robinson is spreading goodness in the world by helping Mayella Ewell with little projects without getting paid. He could have easily accepted the nickel he was offered but he just helped her out of the kindness of his heart. Even though Tom Robinson was convicted and proven guilty in court, he is innocent. The main reason Tom was accused of rape is to cover up what Mayella did to him. When Tom is testifying in court of what happened, he says, …show more content…
His only past record involving harm is when someone got in a fight with him and he got in trouble when he should not have. When Tom is putting his hands on the bible in court, it says, “Thomas reached around, ran his fingers under his left arm and lifted it” (Lee 254). This moment proves that Tom has a crippled arm. It is hard to do many things with an arm that cannot function especially when it comes to punching someone on the right side of the face like Tom was accused of. Tom would never desire to harm someone especially when he has a wife and kids to care

“Shoot all the blue jays you want if you can catch em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” is a statement that Atticus makes which reflects the theme of the book. The reason being is that a mockingbird is selfless; they only sing their hearts out to everyone, not even expecting a reward or harming things that people plant. Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Atticus in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ are the kindest, most generous, and most good-hearted people of Maycomb. Boo can be seen as a mockingbird in the way that he always has an eye out for the children and the thought of them helping him does not enter his mind. Though it costs him his life, Tom can be seen as a mockingbird because he helps someone he feels sorry for, and refusing to be paid.…

I predict that Tom Robinson will lose the case against Bob Ewell. There are two possibilities of what could happen. Either Bob Ewell will win, or Tom Robinson will win. Some reasons that Bob Ewell will win, is that he has a racial advantage, and this could work in his advantage in many cases. One of the cases is that the jury is white, which can cause a very biased opinion towards Bob Ewell.…

In reading “To Kill A Mockingbird” I learned that as a reader we are able to pick up on things before the actual characters in the book do, so we were able to see who the mockingbirds of the book were before they were mentioned or even if they were never mentioned as being so. Miss Maudie outlines the symbolism of what Atticus meant about mockingbirds when she hints that mockingbirds are innocent and do nothing but sing for us, therefore it is a sin to kill one (Lee 93; ch. 10). In the novel as a whole there is a constant battle of evil trying to destroy innocence, which the mockingbirds are meant to symbolize. The biggest and most noticeable mockingbird of the novel is Tom Robinson. Mr. Underwood was the one who gave us the reference…

Though Mayella ‘did something in this society that is unspeakable,’ and took away the innocence of Tom, his wings were shattered long ago in the text, ever since he was born in the South with black skin.
