Atticus is one of the most prominent citizens in Maycomb during the Great Depression. Unwilling to abide the town’s ingrained racial prejudice, he agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man. Where Tom Robinson is being accused of raping a nineteen year old girl by the name of Mayella Ewell. During the trial the court states ¨You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger¨. ¨Yeah but Atticus aims to defend him’’. ¨That´s what I don't like about it.¨ (Lee) (Page 218). This quote means that the court decided that Atticus is gonna defend Tom Robinson in the trial. Atticus wants to defend Tom because he wants to prove that he's innocent and the court should support Tom because he's innocent because he did not rape Mayella and so Atticus is gonna prove it. This word and my quote connect to slavery because adversity means struggle which slaves face a lot throughout all the years they work for a no benefits for themselves suffering a lot and just wishing to be free one day.
